after reading the other BOV thread i was wondering if theres a site that shows what sound comes from specific types of BOVS rather than just a description. I was in scarborough couple months ago and seen a silvia with a BOV that just had an awesome "loud" flutter to it rather then one of those gay PSHH sounds ... im not a fan of BOVs but this ones actualy sounded awesome. Anyone got any info on the ones ive described?
Pressure release valve or more commonly known as a "Blow Off Valve", releases turbo pressure when the throttle plate is closed. The turbo is still spinning and still creating pressure. The forced air will hit the throttle plate and return where it came from. When a BOV reads vacuum from the manifold, it either opens a valve, or softens the valve. Which lets the pressure escape from it's opening. In order to work correctly the air must go back into the intake before your turbo because the Air Flow Meter has accounted for it. If not you will have a temporary rich condition which will upset your idle slightly. Proper tuning can get around this hassle. Most choose to vent to the air, as they love the sweet sound the air makes when it runs to the atmosphere. If the pressure release valve (as some call it) contains a horn or small holes/vents it will cause the air to make a louder/higher pitched sound depending on what is used.
hey, cheers, i knew how they work, but wondering which ones make which sounds etc... lols... sorry... how the flutter sound was acheived..rather then the normal aftermarket ones James
they use a plastic bag over the hose,im not kidding, heard it on one members car on his forum, lol lol , ill let him own up to it !!!!
haha... ive tried looking it up.. apparently you block a hose and the air pressure gets forced back out of the pod creating a flutter... but its BAD!!.. called compressor surge or something... makes this sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuNTnA5A2Fo
You guys are talking about dosing. There was a thread about this a little while ago. http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=258888&highlight=dosing I think it got called "dosing" by the VL Calais Turbo guys. Us Nissan drivers call it turbo flutter or compressor surge. My friend gets dosing on his 180. Its because he has a high pressure BOV. So the bov only vents to the atmosphere under high rpms. There's no recircs so if he doesn't rev it enough and gets off the throttle at around 4000 rpm, the throttle bodies shut and the compressed air backs up against the throttle bodies and forces itself back out from where it came (ie the turbo compressor wheel stops spinning due to the back pressure and the air comes back out through there and back through the pod). Not good for the turbos at all. People can chip blades doing it. Does sound alright though.
the loud flutter sound is no BOV.. sounds get but i had a turbo last 3 weeks because of it and it was unrebuildable e.g. ROOTED
http://www.935motorsports.com/bovmediaX.htm has heaps. and a couple on http://www.turborx7.com/bovmedia.htm I have a blitz, really nice WHOOSH sounds. Basically just the sound of high pressure air being forced out without any high pitched squealing.
The standard type bovs that make the regular venting sound is all that's acceptable, anything else is just rice...
alot of BOV sites let you hear the sounds... if your after a different sound, google the R2D2 BOV, pretty sure SARD makes it, sounds hella different. lol people dissing BOV's for the rice/wank factor... SO WHAT, look at how many zeds on this site have hundreds of dollars of bling! what do you think of them apples! i think BOV's are great, and anyone who doesnt.. good for them, go whinge about something else while i NNNNNCHHH you :zlove:
I just don't like them coz I cant have them To the people who do have them, do you get sick of the PSSHH? I checked out a boosted TX5 a coupla days ago for a mate and it was pretty cool for the first 10 minutes, then I kinda got over it, too loud... I must be getting old
