Just wondering if anyone can help with what this might be.

Its a tinny rattling type of noise coming from the front right of the engine bay and can easily be heard from in the car. It only makes it at idle and if i give just slightly more revs it stops. also sitting at idle if i turn the lights on it gets a bit worse (louder)

Me thinks maybe alternator but thats just a complete guess. my car is a TT auto and i do have an underdrive pulley on the car. i will be getting it serviced in the near future so was going to get it looked at then anyway but thought i might see if any gurus on here can diagnose in case its just something simple i can fix.

any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

im not sure if turning the lights on effecting the noise is a coincidence but anyway, the top idler bearing can make a rattle if its worn out and also the intake cam gears can also make a funny sound with the VVT

    thanks

cool thanks for that, yeah im not sure what the lights would have to do with it but thought that might help someone figure it out. im sure in the 100k service those thing could be addressed.

    Anyone else have any ideas???

If its more of a grinding sound

    It could be turbo related?

Does the noise change when you press the brake pedal??

no doesnt change with break pedal, pretty sure its not a turbo its coming from the front of the engine and pretty sure something attached to the belts

But the change in the noise when the lights are on/off is the interesting part.
If it was related to a bearing or something within the timing belt assembly or accessories belt, you would assume it to increase when there is a higher load on the syetem- putting the AC on for example.
That's my thoughts... maybe someone can elaborate.

Someones dropped a nut or spanner down in the engine bay, stuck his head in and said "f*^k it" and now it's rattling around with idle vibrations. :D

Don't right me off...I've had it...10 mm spanner went missing into that void and never cam back...could here it on bumps tho :D

I found a snapped drill bit and the remains of a wasps nest in the valley of my engine... amazing what you find down there eh? :D

Yeah, I've got a whole lot of 'spare' nuts and bolts in mine :p get them out one day. I've also got a spare light bulb in there somewhere as well

dude i got the same noise, but mines coming from the exhaust, which makes me figure something is in there, mines about 20cm's back from the front of the door in the right exhaust :D, gotta get down there and fix it one day, been driving for about 600kms with it and no bads yet. its defiantly not in the engine or bay as u cant actually hear it with the bonnet open because of general engine noise.

Yes, quite possible. Remove rad & belts and check bearing noise/free-play.. also ck AC idler pulley. If you have a stethoscope you can do it more easily but with car on hoist or jack/stands.

    Pretty Sure

its not a tool or something. i didnt always do it from when i first got the car. i know i havent dropped anything in there. im leaning towards alternator or idler pulley bearings but hopefully will find the prob this weekend.

I have a rattle sound coming from the springs in the intake cam gear thing (some one else can tell you what its called) because it?s a bit old they don?t have quite the spring in them as they use to so when its idling there is very little load on them but when I rev the motor it goes away as the springs load up errr well that how I understand it but I could be wrong but Tom (ZRATED) told me that?s what?s coursing my noise
