My advice would be to stay away from any vans you may see - and people with backpacks :(

    personaly...

i wouldnt go. i knew people that were in the Sari, and they lost their mates and went through hell! So out of respect to them and my grudge against those responsible, i would look at other options.:(

Having been to Bali and just recently come back from

Thailand (last week) I would say Thailand for sure. Mate they are priced reasonably similar but I found Thailand much more enjoyable.
Spent a couple of days on the Island of Koh Sumai and had a blast. Had a beachfront Bungalow for only $37 (each per night for a mate and i). Hired a motorbike for $7 a day each. Cheap food, went to a Muay Thai Competition, went on a jungle safari, drank heaps of booze and partied like animals. Ran into some fellow Aussies who went to a full on Firing range but there is so much 'Guy' stuff to do if you dont want to do the touristy sightseeing like, there is go karting, quad biking, jet skiing, para sailing, beach soccer, and I havent even mentioned the ladies! Mate there are Swedes, Germans, Brazilians and if you are desperate some Pommy chicks as well (flame suit on!) Because you are on an island eveyone is in a 24hour party mood......just watch out for those lady boys!
Heaps more, just still trying to clear the haze..................so ask any questions and ill try and remember:D

We go to bali 1-2 times a year

For young aussie/brit/euro chicks... stay at the Bounty hotel in Kuta

There are many many many bars all around kuta (most down Legian st).
Popular places for young and full of cum female tourist will be Paddy's and Bounty....

If you need any info.. let me know.

    hey simmo,
we did 10nights in bali at bounty, flights on garuda, taxes etc., breakfast included and white water rafting for $1000!!

if you want to be near the action, you need to stay on poppies lane II. stay either at barong or kuta, both are as awesome as each other. head to paddy's or the bounty ship to party.

i'd go white water rafting, and definitely do quad biking. i got the brochure at home somewhere, i'll dig it up.

Bali is awesome. there have been some bad times there, but at the end of the day, you can't stay indoors, anything can happen anywhere anytime.
its cheap and good value for money. i think a long neck of bintang will set you back $1.00AUD. the balinese are extremely friendly and are really cheerful.
make friends with them, a good job pays $50 for a month over there, so if you make friends with any dudes, take them out for dinner etc. They will be forever grateful.

the night life is awesome, and you can spend your days lazing by the pool drinking and meeting people from all over. DVD's, CD's, clothing etc. are cheap so bit of shopping is always fun.

i've done the touristy thing the first time i went there, but if you want to see one tourist thing while your over there, check out Uluwatu. it is absolutely awesome!!

i'll dig up my bali stuff and let you know mate!!

    hey mate,
gone through all my stuff tonight (found some random sh*t hey) and can't seem to find the bali info anywhere.
pretty much, go to flight centre or whereever, get a quote and travel to a few other places to see if they can beat it.
from there, work out what you want to do. the joy thing about bali is that you can book heaps of it when your over there, at the same time, travel agents can do wicked awesome deals which give you a bit of discount.
for what it sounds like you and mitch want to do, i'd stay at either the barong or bounty hotel if i were you.
both on the same street, owned by the same people and both awesome places to stay at. they are pretty much the same thing.
this is how i remember my deal:
10 nights staying at Bounty hotel (1st time i went)/barong hotel (2nd time i went).
flights from perth to denpasar, flying Garuda or Air Paradise
    taxes, fuel surcharge.
breakfast included, hotel transfers, white water rafting.
    $1000 all up.
from there i took over with me $1000. i bought around 200 DVDs and CDs, went quad biking, got boozed every night, saw chook fights, rode mopeds, bought boardies, bintang singlets etc.

seriously, its so cheap. you can spend $10 per meal and you'll eat like a king. booze is cheap even in the hotels, but your best bet is to buy a carton of bintang from the local deli.
we should meet up for a beer and i can tell you the stories etc.
man i love that place!! can't wait to go back again!!

Unfortunately those things are the tourist stuff, Bali is mostly a tourist destination.

    What a scary idea..

If you are looking for mischief I wouldn't go to Bali. The police there have no sense of humour, and Australians are not the flavour of the month at this time.

If you hire a car, remember that third party insurance is unavailable. If you hit someone or something, to the locals that is the equivalent of winning Lotto. They will go after as much money as they can get, and the police will help them do it. Think in terms of thousands and you will get the idea.

There is no question of fault if you have hit something. The Balinese see it this way - "they live there, you do not. They have to be there, you do not. If you hadn't come there the accident would not have happened therefore it's your fault"

Before I understood all of this, I had hired cars in Bali to go touring. The cars themselves are invariably filthy and full of rubbish. Just think, someone else's discarded joint in the back of your hire car and you could face 20 years in a nice prison next to Chapelle.

After the Sari club, I will never go back there.

    Good luck

yeh the police have no sense of humour, do they really have one here as well? they are the authority!!

if you don't act stupid you'll be fine. as for hiring a car, i can't see why you'd need to simmo. have a ride on a moped though, they are awesome fun!!

as for the news headlines tonight, maybe don't fly garuda?
