So You Broke Your Shifter Mount

So you broke your shifter mount and Cresta is out of stock. What does one do??

For a start how do you know if your shifter mount is broken? One or all of the following will be apparant:

    * Your shifter has dropped in height by about 3 inches
    * It makes a strange noise when the car is moving, this is the bottom of the shifter hitting the drive shaft
    * Changing gears is very difficult with 2nd being nearly impossible
    * Really sloppy gear shift feel

**This problem is probably most prevelant in cars fitted with short shifters**

I noticed about 6 months ago that my rubber shift mount was splitting and said to myself "I better fix that before it breaks" Of course I didn't and coming home one afternoon and a quick 2nd-3rd change and some strange noises and a miny gear stick resulted. I pulled it all apart and found this:

I though to myself no problem, just ring up cresta and get another one. Ring up John the next day, no luck, he informs me these are very tricky to find and will probably have to buy from Nissan.

No way those thieving so-and-so's are getting my money so I look through the cupboard and find some Selley's 401 engineering silicone adheasive (that I had used to stick my front bumper back together after the unfortunate fence incident). I squirt it everywhere and the end result looked like this:

    All good!!

    For 3 days...

I was coming back from the Sunshine Coast after picking my shiny new wheels up from Chris (MR TT/Cra-Z-Boy) and had to do a quick shift from 5th-3rd to get rid of this annoying Hyundai S Coupe. Same thing again

I drop the girl home and limp the Z back to my place. The next day at work I get one of the boys to whip me up a quick little bracket and weld it to the old shifter mount. We left the body of the old mount and the metal insert in place to keep the height the same. The end result looked like this:

If you are doing this you might as well do one/all of the following at the same time:

    * Fit a short shift kit, I love them, some hate them
    * Replace the shifter bushings, pretty cheap from Nissan
    * New rubber insulation

The shifter is absolutely wonderful now, feels alot more precise and generally just nice. There is also no way that I will be able to break this one :D

    The only downsides are:

    * The shifter rattles a little at high revs, is fine on the highway though
    * The rubber heatshield doesn't fit quite properly and will require a trim where the new bracket joins up to clip on adequately

Well done mate very ingenious concept and well executed it seems.

Re Nissan price I got a brand new OEM shifter with linkages, shifter arm and this locator you broke for $238 AUD landed ex Nissan Japan took about 10 days to get it. Just thought I would put that up as a comparison

    Cheers

same thing happened to me about 2 yrs ago

and i had the same thing done to fix the prob :D the first weld must have been a lil dodgey cause it came loose but the second time now has been going for 18mths, althou i think the stiffer brace has been havin an effect on some gear crunchin in forth sometimes if u dont get it lined up exactly when changing. ill get around to gettin a new one with the rubber brace at some stage myself and keep the welded one for emergency

Well done mate, but I posted this fix 2 years ago(and numerous times since, so it should be in SEARCH). I put the steel strap UNDER the rubber mount(not on top like you have). Doesn't the strap interfere with fitting the rubber cover that clips onto that lip?
Mine is still working fine, with no noticeable vibration, so I'm not sure why it has the rubber mount in the first place.

OK, I love these replies "but I posted this fix 2 years ago(and numerous times since, so it should be in SEARCH"

People are posting these questions as they are just to Damn Hard to find... Unless a link is provided to the previous post.. The Use Search Reply is useless..

    Search Reesults
    Gearbox = 182 Results
    GearShift = 182 Results
    Gear Shifter = 94 Results
    Gear Selecter = 28 Results
    Manual Transmission = 158 Results
Broken Gear Selector = 2 Results, (No Help, based on this thread)
Broken Gear Shifter = 7 Results (No Help, based on this thread)

The majority of people search first... When a thread is created the heading needs to be thought about, and be relevant to the thread...

Thread Headings like this realy helps in searching..
    "Show us ya ......................! "
"My zed is now off the road:(:( "
    "Parts"

So stop bagin people for posting things that may have been posted before... Unless it is an easy find.....

Dont take this personally CHILLI, its going on in just about every thread...

    Very impressed!:D

I had the very same problem last satuday, almost at about this time, and I ordered one through Nissan and got it for $119 (including GST) and once I put her in, SHE IS A BEAUT to drive! Love the fix you did though:zlove:

    Cheers,

I also repaired mine using Chili's solution in June 05 and it's still working fine.

    Pics:

Weld bracket on as shown here. This replaces the rubber sling that has perished.

Save the metal tube from within the perished rubber sling.

It sits on top of the metal bracket, so the hole in the metal pracket should be smaller than the metal tube (not larger as shown here) and acts as a spacer to ensure the gearknob sits at the correct height.

I've never seen it in the last year or so and it's not in the tech section... I thought it might be useful for someone else who is also a tight arse :p

Yes the rubber doesn't fit properly, I said that ;)

Firstly, I was not "bagging" anyone. I was pointing out that there should have been several posts on record which gave clear instructions on how to fix this problem, along with pics of the method being used. Surely that is what this info is meant to be used for?
My reference to two years, was because several owners followed my original repair successfully and reported this on the forum, so it should have been easy to find, and follow.
I agree that things are often very difficult to find when using SEARCH.

I'm just so pleased to see that someone else(with no previous knowledge of my earlier solution to this problem) should come up with something so similar, and yet just slightly different to mine.
It proves a statement that I have made several times over the past 7 years.

"If you have very tight parameters within which to design an item to do a specific task, it is more than likely that several people will come up with a very similar design". THIS IS NOT COPYING!

Congratulations on solving this problem in this fashion. You know what they say, "Great minds think alike"(and I will personally castrate anyone who finishes that off with, "And fools never differ". So be warned).:D:D:D

Sorry about the rubber boot question, I simply didn't scroll far enough down the post to notice it(I was too intrigued by your pics).:zlove::zlove::zlove:
