Just wondering if anyone has shared this problem... last night i was driving home and noticed my headlights and dash lights would flare brighter as if they were brand new and then after 4 seconds or so would return to normal brightness.. this happened about 4 times... also when i first started my car the battery light came on and flashed on and off extremly fast about 20 times and there was a ticking noise along with the flashing...

You dont have a big amp running from the battery do you? say for a sub? on boot up or sections of a song where theres a lot of/not much bass the amp might be pulling more power/less power and result in the dimming or brightening of ya lights. happened a lot in my old car till i got a secondary battery for the amp. could be way off track but just an idea.

I have been quoted around $120 previously,

and then about 1-1.5 hours labour to get a mechanic to remove / reinstall the alternator. This is assuming that this is the problem. Might pay to take to an auto electrician to confirm.
I currently have a noisy alternator bearing, so I am currently getting an alternator rebuilt (new bearing, brushes, V reg etc).
AMEC are doing it for me on Thursday. I chose to get an alternator from Cresta, and found someone that would rebuild it for me that was way cheaper than AMECs auto electrician. In fact, the total cost with the purchase of the 2nd hand alternator + the rebuild was nearly $200 cheaper than AMECs auto electrician of choice, just for the rebuild.
The rebuild is costing me $220, purchase price of the alternator was $85.
AMECs price (via their autoelectrician) $490 to rebuld my alternator + about $95 to remove / re-fit.
Be clear, that I am not saying that AMEC was expensive, and I am still getting the labour done there, but their auto electrician does seem a little over priced. Anyway, the moral of the story is, you have to remove the alternator (I am pretty sure you would have to) to change the voltage regulator, so it would be worthwhile to get the bearing and brushes done at the same time IMHO.
