This morning I had my car noise tested at Daalder Exhaust in Dandenong "off the record" so that I could be sure that I'll pass the real EPA tests in Macleod in a couple of weeks... I found out today that they not only test the exhaust noise level at a certain RPM, they now have to test exhaust noise level when they let off the throttle (engine deacelleration) after they held that RPM level. In my case, my new set of pea shooters last week blew 91db at 4800 RPM, after having a set of long 2.5 inch hot dog style leuvered resonators fitted on Friday it now blows 86db at 4800 RPM (great!) , but reads a whopping 3.5db higher (89.5db) on deacelleration! I guess it will depend a lot on who tests your exhaust (I've had the test done twice and the first guy did not do this) and the characteristics of your exhaust (mine is 3 inch front pipes, high flow cats, then 2.5 inch the rest of the way, and the mufflers are not that restrictive), but beware, that exhaust system that you have that was previously only just legal (e.g. was reading 89 or 90db when held at 4800 RPM) may now be illegal if it reads at a higher db level during deacceleration.
This is not really new, It was always in the spec, just very rarely measured. Most exhaust joints dont worry about doing that. Just measure it at 4800 (i think it is)
EPA l was driving up springvale road got to whitehorse rd intersection ...saw a motorcycle cop sitting across the road having a drink of water...l said to the misses ...he going to pull me over...she said naaaa bet ya $20.00 Went over the intersection, got 300metres down the road and whooooop pull over...he said "we are working with the EPA and your car sounded loud to me " l said "no its not"...he said "yeah it sounded loud to me " l said NO it's not" he said ok have a nice day. ????????? buggered if l know how it worked .......and l won $20.00 bucks
yeah l know but the 20 l never got to see the $20.00 women sheeeeeesh wouldnt have half filled my tank anyway curious that he made the EPA quote though Had an excessive noise notice put on my bike ..came from a cycle cop at the airshow who took down my plate it cost me a bottle of Baileys irish creme to fix that one ..but thats another story
epa notice is probably in the mail! Hopefully you got off scott free but then there's a chance he's just gunna get the epa to send you out a letter in the mail and decided that it wasn't worth arguing about on the spot
