I was just wondering, i own an 88 300ZR and i wanna start modifying. I was told that it would be best to start by raising the boost using a boost controller. Would this be a good idea?? i intend to race this car on a circuit. so id rather the boost stay low to allow the turbo to be more responsive, the boost is still factory [7lbs] and dosent actualy have an intercooler fitted. so is there any other alternatives other than raising the boost to a first step, i was thinking of upgrading the intake and outlet manifolds. But i also found that parts for a 300ZR are a pain in the ass to find. so do you think that extractors designed for a Z32 [VG30DETT] would still be able to be put onto my Z31 300ZR [VG30ET]? i could imagin so being the same block and displacement. Are there any reccomendations as to where i should start?
first up i would make sure everything is running the way it should be....no use upgrading if you have a boost leak, etc,etc.... first mod would be to put a pod filter... next an exhaust system... next up the boost...(& install a cooler) straight after upping the boost, i would get a tune done... upping the boost does not make the car more less responsive....if its tuned for it, then itll gooooooooooo
dude get the basics sorted first, intake, exhaust, boost controller and a intercooler, then get some dyno time and c what u can safely run without detonating
oh okaii. thanks for the advice. yeh im sorta new to all this, not only that im 17 and not all that knowledgeble in automotives.. lol not yet anyway. yeh the engine seems fine from what i know, only problem is the alternator isnt charging =.= and the tappets sound a little noisy after start up. But im getting all that fixed wen i get the cash. And umm, one more question? how do you check for boost leaks? is this like, vacuum problems or sumfin?
yup vacuum leaks...just gotta get a compressor to pump air through where you pod goes....pump about 5psi into it, and listen to any air leaks....then replace that hose that is leaking etc....check again...
isn't your zed for sale? according to your sig pic. if so is there a point in spending money which you won't get back anyway?
lol well the truth is. im sellin cos i need the cash to move into my new house. and buy essentials for living, things like washer, dryer, fridge, furniture, etc and also pay the bond + rent in advance.. But, im also saving the money for that while i got her for sale. So if i end up saving the money that i need to move out and no ones bought the zed, then i guess id take her off the market and keep it. If it does sell before the time i get the money thats good, if i can get the money without sellin her thats even better.
ok heres the basics youll need 1)exhaust including dump pipes and high flow catalytic convertor 2)pod filter or better flowing airbox filter element 3)larger and thicher than standard intercooler, probly a front mount for your car 4)boost controller, preferably electronic but manual will do if you prefer 5)upgraded clutch and lightened flywheel(optional) 6)tuning to suit new setup,or aftermarket ecu if you prefer things also to consider.....decent semi-synthetic or full synthetic(preferable) oil,new oil and fuel filter, new gearbox and diff oil(probly havent been changed in many years),upgraded spark plugs, boost leak check, all will effect your performance, and therefore total power,if not working correctly..... hope this helps ross aka jinxed :zlove:
I think there is something bigger here we are all over looking - a 300ZR is non-turbo !!!! So the first thing to do is to work out do you actually have a 300ZR... The 200ZR is turbo as is the 300ZX - but both with totally different motors. The 300ZR has a VG30DE. The 200ZR has a Red Top RB20DET - rubish motor The 300ZX has a VG30ET
and i quote..... "the boost is still 7psi factory and the car doesnt have an intercooler....." please show me a na car that runs 7 psi of boost?...lol.... not having a go i thougt that the 300zr was non-turbo also until i read the thread.... i beleive though that his car is a 3ltr single turbo v6,the start of the turbo 300zx saga i geuss...... rb20det is a good motor, however in the z31 they used the "nics" version rb20,which means no fruit, early rb similar in style to the ca18 motors of the same age.....not as powerfull as the r32 skyline rb20dets,but still a good motor and easily modifyable for more power..... ive seen a few powerfull rb20det z31's and they are not to be dealt with lightly, they still go hard.............
Don't doubt yourself 300ZR's are n/a VG30DE No, '88 Z31's are the last year of the second series. Z31's came in turbo form from '84 But i'm guessing that if it is deffinately turbo its a 300ZX series II. Series I - '84 -'85(minor updates in 85 alone) -200ZX - VG20ET -300ZX - VG30ET -200ZR 1 - RB20DET Series II - '86 - '88 -200ZR II -300ZX -300ZR - i said RED TOP is bad no fruit? not enough citris in the old version eh? NICS plenum is the bad bit. It has butterflies in teh intake runners and has a smaller port head. Not the same as a CA18. Most people either swap the motor or at least the head with the R32 skyline unit. ZOOM mag tend to dissagree with you on the scope of power a redtop RB20 can make (they had a tech article on them a couple of years back) and i know ZOOM isnt always right... but personally i havent seen any big power red tops Yes i'm sure you can modify them for big power - but it's just easier and cheaper to buy teh silver top components.
have to agree, the nics rb20 is inferior to the later model rb20 though i have seen the older nics rb20 run good power..... for example there is a mate at my work,r31 skyline with nics rb20 powered drift style car, makes a claimed 270~280hp at the wheels......mods are exhaust, pod, boost, oil cooler and intercooler, and a bee r riv limiter change thing (wtf?) lol.....ok so its not massive power but its still good for a street car.... ill have to dig up the issue but i have seen a car in a magazine called "perth street cars" which had nics rb20 running 200+rwkw....dont know whatever that is in horsepower....again not to bad i think imho..... xnrtik's car is a 88' i think.....it has the later model z31 flared gaurds and smoothed panels etc.....looks hot at the end of the day im still glad ive got my vg30dett in my zed though!!! to xnrtik......i hope you dont sell your car and end up keeping the z31,we need more old school zeds here in perth...good luck and happy modding to decoy......your 6 throttle body zed......more info if you would be so kind to post it up would be sweet.....would love to know more details, sounds full on :zlove:
so ___xnrtik^ what sort of Z31 do you have? Jinxed: F54 L28 block bored 3mm over L20ET rods KA24 flat tops L28 crank Rebuilt N42 head Flywheel extensively lightened with RPM HD clutch 240z close ratio 5 speed 3.9:1 R180 diff 10.6:1 compression ratio Dont have camshaft specs yet Nismo 6-2-1 extractors Every bush right throughout the car replaced with urethane new reco'd steering rack, tierod ends etc shortened koni adjustable struts with custom wound king springs Reco'd 3 core radiator Hilux 4 piston calipers That's where i am at so far. Got a new roof and doors to go on too also a sweet set of 15" wheels.
sorry... i gave out wrong info. I honestly thought it was a zr [shame] i know. but its a series II Z31 =/ with the VG30ET. tsk tsk. mah bad. Just that i was told it was a zr by heaps of ppl and i believed them eh. only had her for bout 5 months so i still dont quite know everything (anything) much about it.
I wounldn't be worried about that - your car will be faster with a little bit of tuning than a 300ZR anyway! Far easier to modify
