Hi, MY name is Ben and I live in Melbourne. I have had my Z only a few months. Its a red 1993 2+2 targa with leather interior. The car was stock when I get her. I added a Hitec ECU, Unifilter Air Filter, Automatic Line controller, synthetic oil, Transmission cooler and was ready to fit a new exhaust when all of a sudden.

Loud hammer noise from the engine when started. Engine Gone. SH*T!

I have had one mechanic look at it and he thinks there is noise coming from the top of the engine and the lower part of the engine so needs a reconditioned block and use my heads which will be minimally machined. This labour can be completed with a 20,000km 12-month warranty for around $5800. This price includes servicing the radiator and pretty much performing a 100,000km service.

While the engine is out the mechanic suggests reconditioning the turbos for $1650.

The turbo's were running good before though with a lot of vapour at high boost from the stock exhaust.

Since the engine has to come out I am considering all of my options on rebuilding and turbo options including hi-flowing. I am saving money from scratch.

Reading between the line around 400HP can be achieved without modifying much. Fix the engine and add exhaust.

500HP could be achieved by Hi-Flowing the turbo's, dump pipes and race pipes, UD pulley, new 555cc injectors or 650cc ones and new intercoolers and boost Controller.

Any more power and I think I would most likely need a stronger engine. So I'm asking guys what would you do in my situation. So for 600 to 700HP I would need a stronger engine. What exactly would need doing?

The quote I was given included and option for $8500 for a
    Fully reconditioned change over engine.
Hot tanked, honed, rings, bearings, micro polished crank & all clearances
    measured inside tolerance.
All processes, parts & warranty mentioned in alternate motor above.

This price doesn't look to include forged pistons and rings, rods, gasket, etc. What do you guys think?

Would I need to do anything else, especially if I wanted over 500HP?
Would the old engine being repaired with imported turbo block be good for 500HP?

Can I buy a cheap second hand engine, I think I can get one for around $1500 from East Keilor Wreckers? Should I use my old engine? Should I rebuild a cheap second hand engine?

What is a good price for a re-conditioned engine in Melbourne?

If I went the way of rebuilding en engine with stronger internals then I would probably replace the turbos with GT28RS or something new, needing 5 bolt dumps and injectors? Would I need a stronger fuel pump?

I guess I really want to get 500HP minimum from my car engine. 300rwkw hopefully.

Sorry for the long post, lots to cover. Just need some help.

The car has been inspected at the Z shop in Melbourne, have been speaking to Spencer at Nissport, he would need to take the engine out first to find out what is wrong. I haven't spoken to Wallards in Bulleeen yet. I want to get a good bit of information on what people recommend.

    I forgot to mention.

The car is blowing smoke, this smoke clears up once the car gets to 60kph where is runs better. The engine hasn't been pulled and a compression test has not been completed.

The first tool you need is the search tool on here to answer those questions for you.

$8500 sounds over the top with no pistons. Shop around and most importantly make sure you are going to a good workshop that knows what they are doing I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!

Don't rebuild the stock turbos for that much you can buy GT28's for around that money.

300rwkw can be achieved on an internaly standard motor and turbos depending on condition.

But seriously this stuff has been covered over and over agian - just search it.

Also that's not vapor - it's white oil smoke from the turbos if its a full tilt.

The other smoking sounds like my car when it smashed the rings - do a compression test but i think you will find the engine will have to come out anyway
