    Hi

Just joined and thought I'd say hi. I've been a member of oz300zx for a while but this place seems to get more action so I thought I'd join here too.

    Here's my Zed:

I love this car, had her about 9 months.

Everything was sweet untill she start blowing smoke a couple of months ago (might post about it later with a few questions).

    Anyway that's me.

    Nice looking machine man...

Welcome to the forum. Your car looks like its been looked after, the paint is falling off mine. I'm sure the members here could tell you everything you'd ever need to know about your car. Have a good one :zlove:

    Nice Zed!

What colour is the smoke - white, black, or blue-ish? Are you using Synthetic oil and changing at 5,000k intervals?

It's oils smoke (blue). Yeah I've been changing oil and filter every 5000km. I was using Penrite fully synthetic, but switched to Mobil 1 last change (smoke started before last change). The previous owner said he had been religious on changes and I believe him.

At the moment I'm thinking it may be valve stem seals (or maybe I'm in denial that it's turbos).

It smokes a little on cold startup. Sometimes under hard reving. Always on acceleration after engine braking, and a little bit at idle after driving.

I've pulled the front 4 plugs (haven't been bother with the back 2 yet). One of them (cylinder 2) is black and oily (there is wet oil in the thread). The other 3 are clean.

I've stopped driving it and am gonna do a plenum pull when I have the time to get a better look at things.

    Welcome!

Great to see another Tas Zedder join up! :D
Where abouts do you live in Tas? I'm in Dev ATM. There are a resonable amount of active Tas members on this forum, no doubt a few of them will reply on this thread within the next couple of days :)
The most are in Hobart, where i used to be  We have cruises/meets every few months or so. U should come on the next one, so keep an eye on the coming events section.
The more ative members that we can get together the better IMO, it would be great if one day soon we can get enough interest to start track days etc  :zlove:
As for your smoking habit... The best advice i can give is to read the Tech section on this forum and search topics in "Z related" And Just read, read, read! There is so much good information circulating on this forum, it's adictive!
I wouldn't go to extremes such as a plenum pull either until you have checked out everything else.
Have you done a compression test? If you come on another Meet soon we might be able to hook your car up to the Nissan datascan program to check for errors etc too.
The other thing to check is oil coming from the PCV valves and cam breathers (search in A-Z in Tech).

Thanks for the info OdinZ. I live in Lilydale, which is about 20ks North of Launceston. I'd love to meet the local zed comunity.

As far as the car goes, I really don't like to drive it at the moment, it's burning a fair bit of oil and has started making a frightening knocking sound, when first turned on. It's very loud but itermitent, maybe goes once a second for the first 10-20 seconds and will then disapear.

The first time I noticed the smoke, I got home and there was oil around the engine bay, on and near the battery and under the car. So I thought it was getting out somewhere and burning. But that problem hasn't reocurred, it doesn't leak oil over night (in fact I had it sitting for a month when I was on holiday and not a drop) and is now smoking out the pipes.

I'm pretty much resigned to the fact I have to take bits off her, plus I'm kinda keen to get my hands dirty and find out a bit more about her (will probably regret saying that once I start).

    Welcome...

    Clean looking Zed :zlove:

I too have a strange smoking issue. I suspect a leaking valve stem seal to be the cause. If you're worried it could be turbo seal, it's not that difficult/expensive to have the exhaust (dumps) removed, & check condition of exhaust wheel.

The fact that you have oil in your engine bay is interesting. It could be you have a blocked PCV valve, causing your crankcase to over pressurise, forcing oil past the seals. The oil could have escaped out of your dipstick... so see if your dipstick has oil a long way up it.
