I'm planning on importing a 300zx from Japan and need advice on what is the best 300zx to buy and how much should it cost landed and complied.
I've got about 25k to spend...

I was thinkin somewhere along the lines of:
94-95 300zx 3.0L TT 2 Seater 5spd Manual with Targa Top, ABS and low km's.

I have called Just Cars who is about the only insurance company that will insure me and it turns out that the models made after 92 can be insured for more, also if it has a targa top it can be insured for more, and the more mods it has then the more it can be insured for.

Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated
    Thanks! :D

If you haven't done this before and don't have access to trustworthy people over in japan then with the budget you state the you should shop here in aus where you can touch ,feel and inspect in person . There are a lot of traps that can drive a bargain up quickly . I have been quoted approx $4000 cost after getting any 300zx that is allowed under RAWS in my driveway + rego . I think at the moment there are only 2 RAWS 300 people in aus 1 in sydney and one in qld.

first up .. keep your budget QUIET ,,!!!! secondly,

.. before your commit to a 94-95 model, check out what is available in australia, albeit earlier models .. there are some damn good deals going on the forum at the moment ,, zeds that have been cared for, serviced and with all the essentials already done ... beware, take care .. and read all the forum has to offfer .. tech section, search, and the like ....:zlove: :zlove:

I have looked around Perth and there isn't much available for what I'm after and am a bit dubious about getting one from the eastern states and also through this website... some of them seem too good to be true i.e. stolen. I would much prefer to get one through a dealer rather than privately.

I would also prefer to get a model made in 94 or after as these are the only models that have ABS and airbag.

I just dont want to get ripped off by the dealer thats all... so I guess what I need to know is how much I should be paying for a stock 94 or 95 and how much I should be paying for a modded 94 or 95

if you really want to go the whole hog. go to japan to find one, you might get a good deal and a great trip too.
i paid 11k for mine, 1.5k for road worthy. then rego.
mine a '90 and the only problem ive had with it besides the f*&$ed engine is the horn doesnt work. but dont go by 11k for a bad condition Z, i got screwed (sorta). i've read that if your importing your looking at around $23k but you might get a fantastic car you might get a lemon. if you are going to import research your importer, find people that have bought cars from them and ask them a few questions. thats about all the advice ive got for you

i *think* it's safe to say that zed4life isn't going to buy thr '97 that's in melbourne. maybe u should look at that? think he was asking 30+ tho. bit more than ur budget, but atleast you'd get to inspect in aus :)

apparently on 16k on the clock. flights to melbourne are pretty cheap.

    good luck!

U Trust Japan not Eastern States

    Hmmmm interesting!

My observation: (with tongue in cheek) You would trust a culture you probably know nothing about rather than someone in the Eastern States of Australia!

It is interesting that you are dubious about this site. My personal experience is that the people who frequent this website are genuine, honest, and reliable. It is also my experience that if they say they know the condition of a particular vehicle, then I'd be pretty confident that they know what they are talking about. Therefore, if you are dubious, then why ask for advice. There is no obligation on us to prove anything to you. Don't insult us !!!

If you want to import a later model Zed from Japan, then you'll need to go through the RAWS and SEVS scheme. I'd suggest you talk to J-Spec as well as those others suggested - get in touch with Blipman. He's a member of this forum and his details are in the member's section. I have imported through him and I have only positive things to say.

Just Cars is probably not the only company that will insure you (depending on your experience and driving record).

    Cheers,

    Peter

Well I tend to go by word of mouth and from what all my relatives and friends know about imports (both my bros have imported cars) its better to import rather than source privately from aus due to the cars there having lower k's and being driven less. The reason I won't buy privately from East or anywhere for that matter is coz I won't buy privately. Not after being dupped before and seeing others get dupped. Most people ask for more money than the car is worth, it comes with no warranty, usually thrashed, possibly stolen etc, etc. As for this site/forum... I think its great, lots of info, ppl know what they're talkin about and offer some really good advice like you just did. I only just joined today and from what I can tell you guys seem like nice genuine trustworthy people so thanx for your advice.

BTW I have tried other insurance companies but due to my record amongst other things I believe Just Cars is the only one.

Whoa!. Now there's a comment designed to get you all the help you need... NOT!
How long have you been looking at this site, how well do you know ANY of the members?
You're on your own, for mine.

Ok, let me correct myself in saying one of them seemed too good to be true...
not mentioning any names but honestly who sells a really souped up 300zx for around 10k

I don't know of the example to which you refer, but an '89 Z32 in only average condition would go for around 10K regardless of how "souped up" it was. One thing you will learn about Zeds, is that is not the mods which govern the selling price (you NEVER get back the money you spend on mods), but the overall condition of the car. That is to say, a stock example in excellent condition will bring more than a modded one in average condition, other things (TT or NA, 2 or 4 seat, year, etc) being equal.

    unfortunately yes :(

but shouldn't one be able to tell from the photo's of the engine, interior and exterior?

    Apology accepted and insult forgotten.
Now for some advice! At the top of each page is a list of options including "FAQ" and "Tech". Have a look in these for heaps of useful info. Also look in the "Coming Events" forum to see when the next event/tech day is in your region. Go along and get to know the members... you will soon suss out whose advice is worth listening to.
Whether you import, or buy locally, privately or through a dealer, talk to people and don't be afraid to ask questions (there's no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers), find a good one within your budget (don't buy the first one you see... unless you come back to it after seeing others), allow anything up to 4-5K for 100K km service and other details, insurance, etc., and ENJOY. Most Zed owners will tell you that the Zed is one of the BEST cars they have owned.

These are only cosmetic details and are easily spruced up by the seller. Unfortunately, the internals of an engine aren't so easy to see. However, as long as you take care of the car once its landed, you should have little problem unless it was treated with zero respect back in Japan.

as far as I know, they all have ABS, (my 89 does!).. no need for airbags cos if you crash your Z, you'd want to die anyway.
