Installing new horns...

Finally got around to organising a triple air horn to replace the embarassing "meep meep" that seems to be fairly common amongst the Z's.

Just wondering if it's safe to leave the dead horn connected, and just connect the functioning horn's wiring to the new system?...

I'm just a bit concerned about giving it a blast and blowing up all the electrics!?

I just disconnected air horns that the previous owner had on the car... reason they didnt work all that great and they are a good enough reason for the cops to place a unroadworthy/defect sticker on the windscreen... if you must want air horn i would personally connect it to a new button and place it on dash or console and leave the original... that way if you ever get pulled over the police can see you stock horn works from the steering wheel and you can still use the air horns via a push button.... at least you wont get lumbered with a defect or unroadworthy sticker.... as if you dont have a good service station that knows you,, then they charge whatever they like for roadworthy certificates.... this is what i would do as a precaution... i will connect my air horns up at a later date but i want lacook a racha music horns.... i do this with lots of illegal mods, i have a consol for illegal mods that i can use and turn on and off at a push of a button incase i get pulled over all the stock stuff is working order.... just my 2 cents worth...:D :zlove:

You could use a relay if you want to reduce the power load on the original wiring.

Coincidence - I also hooked up triple air horns (about a month ago). I have disconnected the original horns.

The air horns came with a relay and recommendation of a 30 amp fuse. As the stock horns run off a 15 amp relay, I disconnected them and plugged in the air horns directly without wiring in an additional relay. This works fine, so I guess the 30 amps is overkill.

I'm not sure if 15 amps is enough for both factory horns and the air horns though. I guess you could try it and see if the fuse blows.

    Cheers,

I don't know the rules regarding other states but reading through the vic rules it says that as long as the air horns play one note and not a tune they are completeley legal.

Yeah, as far as I know, only the musical horns are unroadworthy in VIC.

The car's actually at an auto-electrician's at the moment to get the faulty speedo fixed up, as well as a stack of minor wiring faults that are causing blinkers and other components to drop off occasionally.

Can't wait to put the horns in though!

    I run both

the standard horns pull in the relay that activates the air horns. Which are fed with a 30 amp fuse as mine really need it.

    I'm working too hard...

I haven't had a chance to continue with installing the new air horns yet, but to save time later, I'm wondering where the horns are actually located on the Zed, adn how difficult they are to get at?

I had a look in the tech section and couldn't find any pics.....

    AIR HORN INSTALLATION (EASY)

Hi ,they are legal here in victoria, take out the centre panel at the front, the one with a zed badge on it,pull out the 2 wires off the original horn, mount you airhorns ,using the 2 original wire +/-,and put in a 30 amp fuse in where your original 15 amp horn fuse goes, its done.I did it last weekend and they work a dream,si:)
