Hi guys I posted a thread about having auto trans problems, well I took it to the mecahanic to inspect the box by taking the pan off the bottom. As I thought it didnt look nice in there as the meachinc said, there were metallic fluids and pieces circulating down there. He then said the labor to find out what the exact problem is, is going to cost $450. Then from there it will be the parts and labor for what needs to be done. I was hoping someone that might have had this problem or knows about it can tell me if they think they might know what could be wrong with my box and how much it might cost to repair, coz the mechanic said it is about $2500 for a full rebuild but as I said im really on a tight budget I want just a repair. Any input will be nice, thanks!

generally you can't "just repair" the auto box. if it has chewed up the internals which it sounds like then its either a rebuild or a swap for a second hand box

There is no quick, cheap fix. I paid $2150 for a full rebuild plus shift kit (valve body modification). Perhaps shop around and get a better price?

Thanks for the input Byron :D Trying to up the post count?

Don't waste time/money getting the box "inspected" hook up a second hand one and put it in. Try Cresta in QLD or a local jap wrecker/spare parts yard.

I just had mine completely rebuilt including an external cooler fitted - $3500. There is a place in bansktown that will do an 2nd hand for around $1500. I didn't pay for this so it didn't hurt! Oh and the 1500 included r&r.

There's one on ebay for $1

and no bids. That one also needs a rebuild.

You could probably pick one up from the wreckers for $500-600. You don't know what you get though.

Thanks very much guys, I think I guess I might be looking at another second hand box, or possibly a rebuild. If I go second hand then I might have the problem again.

Thats nothing :p if we're comparing...

I had my Manual box rebuilt 3 times now :p LOL

$3850 the first time, $250 bucks to have the shift forks repaired under warranty a week later :p

    $2500 the 2nd time.

and another 3750 the 3rd time including Billet alloy shift forks

Anyone else want me to break the g/box quickly?

    :( Ohhhh :(

Damn expensive Manual g/box :p oh well Can't break these shift forks let me tell ya :p I've tried ;)

Better off with a 2nd hand box if your on such a tight budget, save some cash up and look towards a rebuild ASAP.

    Thats my 2c

    auto tranny rebuild

Hi there, $2500 is a good price for a rebuild as that is what mine was done for at the start of there year. The only cheap alternative is a 2nd hand box. Hope you get your z back on the road soon.
