electrical: no low beam, instead, high beam + no dash lights

when leaving my house tonight, i drove off normally with the low beams on. after about 10 seconds, the low beams turned onto high beams and all dash lights went off.
flicking between low beam and high beam does nothing - when the headlights are on, they simply are only on high beam with no dash lights at all. All other electrics are fine, eg. interior light, indicator, radio.
ive done a search, but cannot find what fuse (s) this is related to. Plz Help.
    thanks,
    gus

Likely a short in the taillights

If a short in the lighting system on low beam is detected, circuitry switches to just highbeam headlights so at least you can get home - no taillights etc.

According the Zed4life (I think) when this happened to Ports about 6 months ago, it is usually traced to a short in the taillights, but may be a short anywhere in the circuit. You'll no doubt find a (15 amp ??) fuse blown in the fusebox in the footwell (near your right foot).

    Cheers,

    Peter

Better to check them one by one and only replace the blown one :)

You can usually see visually if the fuse is blown, although on a few occasions I have even had others check a fuse and we couldn't tell it was blown until we changed it as a last resort to the problem.

I had this problem as Peter has noted.

It turned out to be condensation in the tail light that caused a short.
Check for any signs of this or poor connections.
Changing fuses at this stage won't help as they will continue to fail. Mr Zee spent a 1/2 hour changing mine to no avail.
Did you wash your car today with high water pressure?

    no car wash, but...

just had the car returned from fitting new front bar, rear bar, and side skirts. i'm guessing the lights on the front weren't connected properly by the sounds of things

    5K1TZX Its all never ending....

I had the exact same symptoms....

But mine resulted in a thousand bucks worth of rewiring  (sorry if I freaked you out )

It was quite random actually. What had happend was right out the back of the headlight assembly where all the wires are wrapped together, were tucked very tightly against that cross member that runs along the front of the engine bay and I guess with the very minimal movement it would prolly get with daily driving, slowly wore though the plastic cable loom and through the insulation on the wires casing more than 2 to touch. Everytime I were to try and use highbeams (even though it wouldnt work) smoke just starter to pour off the wires and they all melter together within seconds, some all the way back to the switch in the interior. After that it must have over rided the switch all together and just started to smoke major, its scary shit seeing your interior fill with smoke while your in panic mode trying to disconnect the battery

    Thats my story anyway.

(No interior got hurt during this experence)

put me down for the fuse

I had brigher driving lights (fog lights) and this made it blow the 10A fuse, we replaced it with a 20A fuse
