I just spoke to a guy at autobarn who claims the 15 year rule doesn't apply to any car after 1988 ?

    Is this true ?

Does that mean that 2+2 300zx's built in 1994 will never be allowed in again ?

    hmmmm

i'm not sure on the rule, but you can import any car you want, just getting it to comply is the next thing. i have heard of a rule of some sort, but me being me i never listen much anyway.

The rules have changed since last year

Re : Can some one explain the 15 year rule ?

The guy at autobarn is correct. The 15yr rule used to apply to any car that was 15yrs or older but due to the huge popularity of high performance jap imports flooding Australia (due to 15yrs now allowing z32's, GTR32's etc) they put a freeze on the year model of 1988 or older.

That is governed by a different set of rules, but the answer is YES, a 1994 model Z32 2+2 will never be allowed as an import again (unless the rules change)

The reason behind it is that the Z32 2+2 (NA) was available on the Australian market between 1989 and 1996 so ALL 2+2's of that vintage are prohibited as an import. You can import a coupe of any year because they were not available in Oz.

If you want to give yourself a headache there is a truckload of crap covering these rules in detail. Try using google and typing DOTARS or RAWS  Goodluck

explain the 15 year rule ? - my first attempt

there are 3 rules/situations for imports

    1] PERSONAL USE IMPORT>

your own car that you have owned and used overseas for a significant length of time

2] COMPLIANCED and IMPORTED under SEVS.
needs at leats 2 things to be registered
a] someone to have gotten approval under sevs to comply the car [ costs inexcess of $10,000 just to get the licence to do the work]
b] the car needs to be approved as eligible under SEVS - eg NOT avaiable as a local in AUST at the time eg no imports under SEVS for 300ZX N/A 2+2 - but convertibles and turbos MAY be eligible once a] above has been done for that particular model. So a 1994 300 zx 2 seat turbo is eligible -

    3] 15/30 year rule

    Introductory comments
the old 15 year rule is now a 30 year rule [ [3.3] below], all imports made after 1989 will have to wait until they are 30 years old before imported under this rule.

there is a short term "twilight" period [ [3.2] below]until dec 2006 where 1990 model cars purchased before April 2005 can be imported untill 2007 as 15 year old cars:wacko:

3.2] a 15 year old car [ upon entry into AUST] that was purchased by the importer before May 2006 [ precise date is in aprill, don't have it memorised] this means that if you bought a car made in Dec 12 1990 in Feb 2006. you can land it in australia after Dec 13 2006.

3.3] A car made in 1989 or before can be imported and complied to the standard required by Aust in the year of its manufacture. in 2020 you will be able to import 1990 cars. in 2021 you will be abkle to imprt 1991 cars etc.

NOTE I MAY have the year wrong for the twilight period ie purchase prior to april 2005 NOR april 2006 - but thisd is my first go, without research/checking

EDIT ZX299 posted :LOL:while I was still composing - but I'll be damned if I'm going to throw away 15 minutes typing:angry: !!!

    There is another way......

You can still get them under the personal import rule although it involves living in Japan and owning the car for a year, good thing about it is that there is no compliance when you get it here (99% sure), the bad thing is i think you cant sell it as it doesnt meet australian design rules.

NZ has a heap of imports, so i wonder if you could sneak japanese imports through NZ to bypass some laws directed at stopping imports from Japan to Australia, Australia does tend to give NZ alot of favourable conditions with passports, residency etc etc.....

Re : There is another way......

I think that's why they made the rules to cover the car and not the country.

The only "overseas destination" (I know of) you can ship a zed from with "no strings attached" is TASMANIA :LOL::LOL:

    15 year rule

    Visit these guys:

    http://www.prestigemotorsport.com.au/

I bought my 300ZX through these guys (stock ID #3139 if you want to see) and it all went fairly smoothly. Geoff will be able to answer any of your questions that you can't find in their FAQ section. Search for available 300ZX's - there are still 4 left with valid import approvals! (always speak to Geoff first before committing to buy to get the latest info).

The change to the the laws is a shocker and makes it almost impossible to find the car you want...

Hope this helps - good luck finding your perfect beast!!!

    Re: 15 year rule

dont you have to get import approval under sevs/15 year old rule too. where you send off to office of importation or what not, asking if you can import the car because, your reason. (i want a tt and ur pussies only make NA), normally to do with the apperance, or mods of a car.
