Hey guys, the 'free trial' of norton I got with my new lappy has come to an end, and Im at a cross roads. Do I renew my subscription to Norton anti virus, or go for VET antivirus instead (which is what I had on my old pc).

Or hell, even throw some other random antivirus programs at me....

    Any help, much appreciated.

Why not go for AVG, it's free and it's recommended by Bigpond Techo's.

    Re: Agree with CHILI

Ha, we are a reseller of AVG, and we use it ourselves of course :)

and $50 odd dollars for 2 years if you go for the commercial version.

As mentioned above, there is a free version with no tech support and a few features are missing but nothing too important.

eTrust antivirus. If you have a lot of spare cash. Sophos.

Don't bother trying to download Sophos. It won't work. Unique user system.

lou ..as a supplementary to the pro programs .. go also for a free

download .."ad aware" .. i run pc-cillin and stinger and do ad aware on top of those .. it seems to do/find a little extra ..for no cost ..!!... it still comes up with stuff .. . all this is beyond me .. but i think that the bottom line is that each program has a different focus .. so go for a much as you can ..!!!

    Pc-cillin for me....

I use trend's pccillin plus the ad-aware and spybot S&D bits to keep my system clean.

I'd also recommend changing from outlook/outlook express to something like thunderbird, and look at getting broadband so you can sit your lappy behind a firewall rather than directly on dialup.

If you're smart about what attachments you open and what programs you install then you should have virus free travels.

Let me know if you want more info.

Lou I can recommend avast antivirus

I've been using this freeware program for many years (as have many others I know) and am yet to have any major virus issues. Definately worth checking out

    Egg ....

    I was using AVG.

But found it missed many trojans and viruses.
Or, it would find something malicious and not fix it adeqautely.
I like Norton Internet Security 2006.

    red32 You talkin' to me?

I just upgraded(?) to Norton, but it's having difficulty removing a couple

of spyware thingies - SpyFalcon and Spyware Quake - from my system. However, their website offers extra info which I've yet to implement, so we'll see how it goes. Apparently, one of the first things these two items do is to copy themselves into the Restore file, and then a whole heap of H-KEY statements.

    Re: Whys norton shit?

It's expensive, resource hungry, and due to it's notoriety (reputation) it is a preferred target for hackers and virus writers. Afterall, if 50% of people are using Norton products, and you wanted the smallest amount of code to diable the largest number of computers, which antivirus product would you try and disable?

We regularly use AVG antivirus to detect and remove what Norton can't. AVG is not perfect, no products are, but beware buying on perceived perfomance, based on a name.
