The noise can be rather loud and sounds like metal hitting metal, kind of a clunking sounds (difficult to describe). It's been getting worse so I checked it out today trying to find the cause. My first guess was the aftermarket Midori adjustable upper control arms since there has been so much history with failing control arms of different brands so I thought I'd start there, drivers side. I battled for about 2 hours before I finally removed a striped hex nut to get the control arm off. I then inspected the control arm looking for any signs of wear, marks that would indicate clashing of metals and also for any loose movement but the control arm was as strong as the day it was installed. I also looked at other parts for any sings but everything looked ok. I replace the tension rod bushes about 12 months ago but can't see how that could cause this problem and all the nuts where nice and tight. I'm now suspecting it might be the shocks. The car is lowered about 1.5 inches below standard and I know lowering the height contributes to premature failure of standard shocks. Could stuffed (standard) shocks make such a sound when hitting pot holes?
Did you check the 2 nuts that bolt the tension rods to the suspension Mine was clunking a bit until I torqued up these 2 nuts. Failing that I guess it could well be failing shocks
It could be the stabilizer bushings, have a look at the rubber bushes where its bolted to the tension rod bracket.
can you feel anything through the steering wheel? My drivers side rear shock was leaking oil, but it never made any noise, and it was stuffed!
I had a similar thing when I installed adjustable front upper camber arms. When I got the camber adjusted correctly then no more noise. A rough adjustment based upon the stock arms was 180mm centre of inner bush/bolt to centre of outer bush/bolt. Check your camber adjustment.
