Mafi's recent Hyena vs Lion post reminded me of this one which I saw a couple of years back. After a bit of searching I found them. Their jaw strength is pretty amazing - apparently these guys snap a human leg in half straight through the bone.

i doubt it could snap straight through the bone, sure with a whole lot of

:wacko:twisting but i highly doubt one chomp would snap it in 2.. its not exactly easy to break bones like that.. a croc or a hippo on the other hand..

But they do that jaw locking thing where once they've locked it,

    they don't let go...

Don't look at me - I'm not sticking my arm anywhere near those things!!!

Someone else can test the theory...

re. i doubt it could snap straight through the bone

Yeah it's probably take a bit of gnawing rather than 1 chomp....but why let the facts get in the way of a good story!

I think all canines are able to "lock" their jaws...

My Cavvie bit me on the calf once and it didn't let go until I got the hose on to her...:angry:...BITCH!

The only real way to release lock jaw is to ram a long stick up

their arse (:sick::sick: ) and the shock will jerk the jaws open. A vet told me that for my rottie. Or you can hit them between the eyes, but there is a high chance you will kill the dog :LOL:

Saw a thing on Hyena's last night actually...

They can eat an entire animal, bones and all. Not a thing left but bit of a red puddle.

    Don't be so sure...

I dunno what you guys feed your doberman's or rotty's but if they're comparable to a hyena then im guessing you feel pretty safe to leave your home under their watchful eyes when you go on vacation.....

    Thats a fair strong bite...;)

I wonder who the poor bastard was that got the short straw and .......

had to put the muzzle on the 'dog'. Whoever it was, his name's probably stumpy or lefty by now.

    Great pics!

I don't think any dog can actually 'lock' it's jaw

They just hang on hard. I used to hunt pigs and had a 'holding' dog (mastiff/heeler/bull terrier cross). From my experience there was no 'locking' of his jaw, it's just a lot of determination and vice like grip. But they can - and do let go at will. I think any vet will confirm that there is no 'mechanism' or extra bone etc. that 'lock's itself into place. It's a myth: they hold on, but they dont lock on.
As a kid I heard stories about pig dogs that 'locked' onto a NT water buff and there was severeal buffaolos up North getting around with dog skulls still attached to them

And if you're a smoker (or a smoker is around) the best way to make a dog let go is touch a cigarette to it nose. Second best way is a hose.

    dogs locking their jaws

aparatly pitt bulls can lock their jaws when they attack, and they dont release until their pray is dead, im pretty sure huskies do a similar thing but they also have this spin thing. Theirs a movie on the net of a pittbull fighting a huskie, and the pittbull
locks on, and the huskie spins, and the whole jaw comes out, its nuts, maybe someone can find it
