Hi. Have just recently bought a ZX and had my first cop pull me over for no reason. He proceeded to search the car and gave me two defects. One was there are two gauges on the right hand side of the steering wheel. THe other he said my rear number plate needs a special brace fitted so it can be seen properly. Is this legit? I cant see how the gauges can be dangerous, you would hit your head on the steering wheel before the gauges if you had an accident. And as for the rear number plate ????? The car was only just registered, so how can these be defects Any info would be helpful.
well my number plate is cut to fit in...and i haven't done anything apart from mount it in the spot its suppose to be mounted (i've got no special brace)...and i haven't been pulled over once since i've had my car (1.5 yrs, touches wood)...
Different States have varying rules, where are you from? No details in profile so difficult to advise you.
cops  for QLD yeah chili, different states have different rules. For QLD;- as for the number plate i have been told that if you cut or deface the plate you are damaging goverenment property, and that it has to be read from a 45deg angle from both sides. this is a big thing in imports and the police up here, as the normal number plates dont fit and people rearrange them to fit.. this cost me 1 point and $75... as for the gauges i have been told the are allowed to be on the piller as long as they are not screwed in to the metal, weaking the frame.. and that they dont block your vison. i suppose it depends on the police officer you get at the time tho.. i've been done for silly stuff with my car as the police are trying to crack down on the "hoons".. but as the police say if in doubt with any thing for to the transport office.. stretch
Im in NSW Im in NSW Yeah its a mould mounted onto the pillars. Being on the pillar it of course is above the steering wheel however does not interfere with my vision. Should i just take em down or get an engineering certificate. It seems such a hassle for something that i really dont consider dangerous. He said the 45 degree angle to me too for the number plate. Does anyone else have an opinion or an experience with the number plates on the imports or what i should do about the gauges
I've had police driving behind me at both night and day and none have ever pulled me over for the number plates. My rear one has been machine bent to fit perfectly, but that doesn't change that fact that there's a recess there... I think it all boils down to whether the police are in a good or bad mood.
If your talking about the rear plate having the edges bent... ...to fit, people do occasionally get done by the cops as you are not supposed to alter the plates in any way. I got around this by cutting the sides off the plate so it would fit, then put a plate protector over it though I had to trim it to fit also, and painted a black border down the sides to totally hide the fact the plate has been cut. It now looks like a normal plate with a normal cover over it. Id recommmend that for the defect, dont cut the plate but have it straightened and get it attached with some big spacers to get it clear of the recess, then after it gets cleared of the defect cut the plate and hide the cuts as explained.
the number plate issue has been covered a number of times ... go to search ..with "pexzed" as author and ALL shall be revealed ...!!!!!:thumbsup::wacko:
My rear plates I did have the standard yellow NSW plates on my z32, until I changed it to a normal white plate, and there is a major size difference between the two. Not to sure on the other states plates, but at the rear of mine - it already came with a v type bracket, where the plate sits half on the bumper area and the bottom is supported by two little hooksand you cannot notice it even when u are pretty close. - i am not to sure if u get wat i am on about, but if u want a pic, just PM me and i will get one up asap for ya. Hope this helps. J
I'm sure (for QLD), Pexzed has(or carries) a snippet out of the rules - Can't remember what it says, but he has cut his plates to fit and I'm fairly sure this snippet of his clears him of wrong doing... A bit vauge yes, but mabe Greg can shed a little more light??? Edit: see black baz's post above - that's what I get for not reading all the way down... By the way, my plates have been bent since I got her and have never had any troubles with the police over them...
Re: cops  for QLD But can't you cut etc personalised plates are they are your plates, you own them?
Re: cops  for QLD You may well own your personalised plates, but they still have to comply with the legislated standards, same as the RTA-issue plates, ie, no bending, cutting or otherwise defacing or obscuring.
Plates Just put new Plates on my car sorry for the non 56K friendly size rear does not LOOK bent Didn't it hurt puting Brand new plate in the door jam (the only metal press I had) and closing door.
