Bad things are happening with my gearbox and i'm scared. First gear is getting on near impossible to engage. It requires an arm shattering movement to put it in gear. Second gear is just as bad. Third gear is fine but 4th tends to grate if you either don't shift split second style or wait a second to shift into 4th. Fifth is fine but reverse is feeling like first.

So obviously i need to know a couple of things. The average cost of getting a gearbox rebuilt with new gears that would be needed. Also how much would a new gearbox be. I have a 91 manual 300zx.

    Any estimated would be appreciated

Are you sure its not a clutch problem you have?

    nope not clutch

clutch might be slipping but the clutch only affects the gearbox when your letting the clutch back out. The gearbox crucnhes when engaging the gears.

Also its a Non turbo model, aussie delivered if theres a difference

Youre kidding right? You are going to get a rebuild without doing a few

    checks first!

You must have money to burn:LOL::LOL:
Just sounds to me that your clutch is out of adjustment. Get under your car and check the freeplay between the clutch arm and the push rod ....it should be less than a millimetre but still have a little freeplay and not hard up on it.

But in your case it sounds like there is too much play:unsure:

sounds like your clutch master cylinder may have had it.....

....symptoms are very similar..however i can be very wrong  :D. Check the fluid level (see pic for clutch reservior)...

    engine bay pic

If low check around and above your pedals for any fluid. Its easy to miss because it tends to leak out slowly, if its the cylinder just refill fluid until u can get a new one, should'nt cost u more than $250 even less if u can replace urself (requires removal of brake master cylinder, bleed brakes etc.
:embarrassed:) much cheaper than a tranny rebuild .

as Luig said realigning the clutch is also quite a simple fix too  maybe a combo of the two?

what is the feel of the clutch pedal like?
mine was very loose and did'nt have any pressure just after the cylinder went.

    Cheers

    darn gearbox

Luig i don't have money to burn, just getting quotes on gearboxes form others before i read around wreckers. Talked to my dad and he's gonna look at recond or wrecker gearboxes as he agrees with me its on the way out

Heiffe the clutch feels fine, nice a tight, bit uncomfortable to hold in at lights but i believe it is how its supposed to be

    Re: darn gearbox

i had these symptoms a couple of months ago and my clutch master cylinder was the cause of the problem. got it rebuilt all 100% again.

spend your money wisely and get someone to check whether it's your gearbox or something else.

ah bugger  yeah just make sure you find out the exact prob first..may not need a new box just get yours reconditioned.

    darn gearbox

I don't think its supposed to be all that uncomfortable... Your clutch system is vacum assisted so the power applied should be relatively minimal. The diaphargm in my clutch booster cracked a couple of weeks ago and hence my heavy clutch. Does your car idle 100% or are there inconsistencies when you are stationary. If so you probably have a similar issue or a vacum leak.

I agree with the guys, you might want to take it to someone that knows whats happening, before you spend the money....

    Good luck:thumbsup:

    Third post like this recently

I made a post called Diagnosis help please, read that, and someone else recently started a thread very similar.

I thought the same, gearbox troubles, but upon further inspection it was the clutch plate. Dont go wasting your hard earned when you could simply replace the clutch plate. All my symptoms were exactly how you explained yours. And saying thst your clutch is hard to push in, then you have clutch problems.

    Diagnosis Help Please

had a look at the post, i hope its those things, i'll get them checked out. Isn't there a zed specialist in SA that is near Port Adelaide for those in the know on old port road or something

I don't know if they're Z specialists but they know Nissans

I'm assuming you're talking about the Nissan place down near Fredrick Rd. I used them a few times before I left Adelaide (late '03) and there were normally a couple of Zs in the carpark so I guess they could be specialists by now. They were very helpful and I was happy with their work. You don't need a Z specialist for this type of work though, any brake and clutch joint would be able to sort you out.
