i was using about 1/2ltr per 500km with the motor i pulled out >

was another one of the reason i did the swap 1ltr per 5000kms isnt too bad i dont think but does tell you that the motor is gettin abit tired. are you sure its not leakin anywhere? i had a couple of small leaks as well as it burning oil..

    I can smell it sometimes

and there is leaks under the car but not enough to drip cause there are no stains where i park it

One litre in 5000 k's is pretty good if you ask me! Its not uncommon for

brand new cars to use 1 in 1000. I had a Mazda that used that. As for the oil seep as opposed to an oil leak ....I wouldnt worry.:D

OUCH 1 litre of oil/5000kms would be worrying the hell out of me....

that's nearly 25% of its oil capacity

I change my oil & filter every 5000kms (as do most forum members) and it doesn't use a drop between changes.

I would be cleaning up under the engine and looking for a leak to fix because if it is not leaking the oil then it doesn't sound good.

Actually, that sort of consumption is about right

when you do lots of short trips where the enogine doesn't always get up to temps, actual oil volume consumed gets replaced with water vapour. On the dipstick it looks like no loss but check the consistency of the oil next time you change it, chances are you'll find it watery.

When you do a long trip and all the crankcase water gets burnt up, the dipstick shows a marked loss but the loss is just water...

I only drive my zed about 15 times between oil changes....

so by your theory I should be having to top it up every time I take it out ?

Agree with Ian, shouldn't use any oil in 5,000k's

Mine only lost oil thru weeping exh. cam covers, now fixed, but never showed on the dipstick.

Hang on! hang on! you perfectionists.... the man asked about oil

consumption of 1 ltr in 500o and whether he should worry about it or not. From what your saying then he should overhaul his engine???

I think not and neither would I be pulling the engine for a wettage of oil on the sump either.

Both those are big bickies:( and there is no guarantee that you will fix them. You just have to have the overhaul mob hone the bores on slightly different angle and there goes your oil consumption as did with an engine of mine once....it ended up using the same as it did before after a short while.

Don't get yr nickers in a knot John ;)

I was only answering the Q and said nothing about overhauling the donk.

A healthy engine with 100,000k + km's on it, running synthetic should use little or no oil in between 5k services.

Unless severe leaks from RMS or cam covers, 1 litre per 5k indicates wear. I agree however, no need to do a rebuild, yet.

No John you are misreading my post. I'm not saying pull the motor....

I am saying to clean up under the motor to find and fix any obvious oil leaks, hopefully something simple like a sump plug or bolt, then ascertain if he is still using oil.

I can only judge by MY experience with MY zed and if I was macman21 I would be praying that I find a fixable oil leak because burning 1 litre of oil per 5000kms seems highly excessive when (for the same mileage) I am not using any.

Having said that, if he were to discover that he IS burning 1 litre/5000kms then I would be continuing to top up with oil as long as he can get away with it.

    red32 You talkin' to me?

Max, my NA uses NO oil between changes, and I'm running

a thin (5W40) synthetic. As others have said, clean your engine, go for a drive, then check for signs of leaks (sump gasket, plug, oil seals etc)

BTW have you got your headers on yet? I've had mine on for a couple of weeks now and the difference is bloody brilliant!

yeah red the headers are the best bang for buck so far

I can't wait to fit the rest of the exhaust cause at the mo the 2.5" collector is bolted to a less than 2" pipe and I think some 2.5 inch pipe and cats would make a lot of difference. I'll see how much oil I use with the new 15W-50.
