I'm glad you enjoyed your quick tour of Vietnam... Which city did you stay in? Vietnam has 3 distinct regions each with its own dialect and customs, they are the South with Saigon as its capital, Central with Hue as its historical capital and the North with Hanoi as the country's capital. Prior to 1975 the country was divided into two halves by the 17th parallel at the de-militarized zone. I am, for the record, from the south and do not discriminate from Northerners, only to their idealogy which is not only isolated to the North. Dad fought for the South Vietnamese army and fled the country in 1978. To this day we are staunchly anti communists:angry: which is why I guess we are here. The Vietnamese are a very resilient people having fought off the Mongols, Chinese, French and Japanese. The Americans were allies not enemies, from our point of view. It's such a shame that there had to be a war at all in this area of the world. And of course the Viet girls have a certain unique charm about them that I do find very attractive. And of course the girls in the Vietnamese traditional dress, the ao dai, is also very unique. A short history of the country.
Hope Mary Dosen't get to read that last line of yours Mat, or you could be in trouble.:LOL::LOL:

I could only dream about driving it while away Whenever I was on a twisty road in a bus or a car and watching other cars overtaking us would really make me think about the zed. The most I missed it was while traveling on the Autobahns in Germany, I don't think I need to explain why. Cars would just screeeeem past at ridiculous speeds. But the twisty country roads in Europe would be a great drive in a zed. Maybe we need to organize a holiday cruise overseas
Vietnam ROCKS!!! I loved Vietnam, went last year - probably my favourite travel destination. Stayed at Ho Chi Min, Hoi An, Danang and Hanoi. Love the people, the culture and particularly the women, many petite beautiful women, and they dress impeccably. Was lucky enough to be a guest of the People's Army and was given escort everwhere I went. Awesome shopping too....would go back there in a heartbeat! Israel/Egypt - as a child was visiting my dad who was in the MFO (peace keeping operation to stop arabs and Isrealis from killing each other..ha ha!). Spent months in Tel Aviv, also put my hand in the hole where Jesus was supposedly crucified....big shrine built over it in Jerusalem. Dome of the Rock, Valley of the Kings, etc etc. Getting bogged in the Sinai in a UN Jeep, being dug out by Bedoiuns armed to the teeth. China - was there last year, awesome to visit, spent time in Beijing, Shanghai, Urumqi. Urumqi was amazing, out in the desert near Mongolia and Khazakstan. Great Wall of China, Terracotta Warriors. Had a PLA escort for the entire trip. Thailand - last year, spent a few days in Bangkok, great shopping, lovely women. France - losing my credit card after it was swallowed by an ATM, having to survive for 3 days with no cash. Exciting times. Currently living in USA for 6 months, then going back to UK and Spain.
Had a chance to visit Vietnam back in the late sixties Fortunately the guys organising the tour decided I wasn't suitable.:LOL::LOL:

Last year went on a contiki tour through europe. Saw france, italy, austria, switzerland, germany, london, amsterdam and an additional week in poland. Didn't really enjoy the tour group as it is mainly a bunch of 18year olds who wanted to get completely smashed every night and didn't get to spend enough time in most places as we saw all that in 30 days so some places we were only there for a few hours! Was great to see the places though, good experience and good way to decide on where to go back to. Switzerland was probably my favourite place. Very beautiful. Actually leaving for Penang in Malaysia today for 7 nights. Yay warm weather
