Earth ground kits. Who has done this?

Did a search & came up with almost nothing.
I have heard about this before & have heard of people getting results but i wanted to hear from anyone here who has done it.

    Firstly i want to know:
If anyone has any dyno graphs, before & after? Is there any truth to the power gains?

Secondly i want to know if the people who have done this, actually had no other problems before hand & had all clean connectors?

And last, just want to hear from anyone who has done this with success (&what issues did it cure?) as i think this is a great cheap mod that would benefit to most cars. If so what kit did you use, or did you do it as per the tech section?

    Cheers,
    James

I don't know anyone with one. 1 person came to a tech day a few years

back and had a ground kit and said it was good but that's about all i have heard. I will be getting one in a few months. A lot of people believe they do nothing but I find that hard to believe when famous tuners in japan use them on their race / high powered cars e.g. Top Secret.

I wouldn't 'expect' to see a power improvement but maybe a better idle?? who knows..
If you do get one let us know how it goes

    Yeh will do!

I have all new connectors, refurbed injectors & a very low kay engine that i have put in recently (& atm it idles as smooth as a babies bum) so i dont know if it'll make much difference but as you say, if the big boys from Japan use them then they must do something.

I have a bunch of 8gauge wire here so the cost is very minimal, so if it does bugger all then nothing is really lost.

    Will post up any results.

I might even do it when Mark (Zed4life) is going over my car as then i can get a 2nd opinion if there is 'any' changes.

    Cheers,

I used to have probs with misfiring under boost. . .

But it seemed to go away after i connected some 4 gauge wiring from my block to chassis and chassis to battery.

Apparently it minimizes spark "blowout" if your approaching the capacity of you ignition system or if there is some minor fault in the system.

    Spark blow out..

    was that on your Soarer?
I ask this cos the ignition system on the Zeds are pritty dam strong things when everything is in good nic

    AndyMac Better than you

I've got one, i dunno if it helps or not cause it came with the car...

Although i can say I've never missed under full boost (16psi)

I can post a pic if you wanna see the grounding points used.

Have always added extra earths on all my cars!

As VEEP was saying it does help minimise spark blowout through giving you a stronger spark! We found that there was about a 10hp gain on the dyno on my Bridge ported old rotary (not bad for old chook cooker) with a electronic Distributor system and I have always found that cars will run smoother with extra earths, even if it is just boosting the factory earths that can get shitty/corroded over the years.

Yeah as you were saying dont go out and buy one though! Get some good 8 gauge wire and quality ends for heaps cheaper and do a neat job of crimping them and place them in a variety of places ie the block (if possible), manifolds, body etc, 5 or 6 does the trick. The kits seem very expensive for what they are.

Looking at John Penglinton's car, he has the coilpacks

all individually earthed also to the adjacent coilpack bolt(the RHS black wire as you are looking at the car from each side).

Looking at this diagram, you can see that all six of the OEM coilpack earths travel thru one wire to ground so it would make sense that individual earths would help just that little bit more.

As prob 75~80% of zed probs (missing, rough idle etc) can be attributed to poor electrical connections-this mod makes sense and I agree on the home made variety = cheaper and more fun!

As others have said, I wouldn't expect more power, but rather a more stable running state.

I'll do this to mine one day ... when I get a chance to pull a bonnet that's mine

Doesn't that introduce ground loops which can raise the ground potential

and hence make electrical things not operate as they should. I.e. say you call the battery -ve 0V and the +ve 12V then with multiple grounds your engine earth may be up to 2V above the battery -ve leaving only 10V for electrical stuff that is expecting a 12V supply.

The electrics for the Zed has been designed to have a single earth from engine to chassis and chassis to battery -ve for the very reason of preventing ground loops.

You would be better upgrading the gauge of your -ve cable leads to something like a 70sqmm.

What you say does make sense but I still would like to know why the best

tuners in Japan use them on most of their cars. Surely they would know better than us..???

I did a home made install 12 months ago.

The car went well before installation and well afterwards.
I did not feel any benefit but it did not hurt.
It cost bugger all and was easy to do. You will rarely hear this said about a Zed.

Well if you havent had the time to pop your bonnet...

In about the next 3weeks or so then i will bring mine round & we'll attack it.

While we are at it we could measure it all up & just make some more for your car.
I'll talk to you more about it in the next few weeks.

    Cheers,
    James

p.s Chewy makes an interesting point though. But i didnt think the earths looped back on to each other though, so hopefully we'll have no prob
