    Hi Guys,

well i need alittle help as ive been searching for days on the net with no good answers i thought i might try my luck as we have a few well experienced IT gurus around.

anyways my problem is that i'm using torrent programs but the download speed is a horrid 30kbs on my cable connection.

i'm using a motorola surfboard which is a usb cable modem, so unlike a router i only have 1 port therefore i obviously cant open another port (this is what everyone suggests for some reason  )

what am i too do? just lump the slow download when it should be running anywhere between 200kbs and 500 or is there a fix?

    thanks guys

your download rate is limited by some software depending on your upload rate and ratio.

There is also the chance that the torrents you are downloading dont have many seeders/leechers.

There are alot of reasons why you get average download speeds.

I recommend azureus as a bittorrent client.

Make sure you are sharing aswell.

Most clients limit you if you do not share files at a fast connection yourself.

There is a client that lets you trick it into thinking you are sharing more than you actually are thus increasing your downloads..

This is not true - your computer has literally thousands of ports avaiable - what people are suggesting is increasing the number of ports bittorrent is allowed to use - you should be able to do this from the configuration menu of your client.

not sure if i get you right, but do you mean the settings of the torrent

program or system settings in my computer. I'm currently using Bittorrent 4.0.2 but i can't seem to find a setting for it.

i'm sure it's not a sharing issue as I have my sharing setting up quite high, my upload is set to about 90kbs but it only actually uploads at about 15kbs.

    thanks heaps for the advice.

    Seems normal to me

I'm assuming you mean 15 KBytes and not bits.

15kBs (kilobytes) or 128kbs (kilobits) is max upload speed if you're with Optus cable.

    Few things to consider

    1. You say you dont have a router so connections shouldnt be an issue.
    2. Make sure that there are plenty of "seeders" for the torrents that you are wishing to download. You wont get fast speeds if its a brand new torrent with 1 or 2 seeders.
    3. Azureus definatly is the client of choice, ive been using it since release.
    4. Some trackers wont let you connect on the default ports so you may have to change your client port
    5. If you are actually routing then you will need to add some port forwarding rules in your router so all Bittorent protocol data gets forwarded to your machine, or set up your machine to be in the DeMilitarized Zone (DMZ - all ports forwarded to that machine).
    6. When setting your speed limits allow some overhead for doing other stuff. dont use up all your bandwidth for P2P or you wont be able to surf the net at all

For P2P to work efficiently all clients need to be contactable, all clients need to seed completed torrents and at a reasonable speed.

Hope some of that helps ?

having just done some simple calculations i think your right......

it seems that i may just be expecting a little too much from my meager bigpond plan, 128kbs seems to be the case, as i worked it out that if i'm d/l say a 700meg file it will unfortunatly take me almost 10 hours.

and well since i can only upload at 128 kilobites per sec it seems to limit my download speed as well.... shame really.

the files i'm downloading all seem to have a at least 10-20 seeders so the slow rate wasn't contributed to that.

    Anyway thanks again everyone
