    Approved Grand Touring Car

But if you were to translate the phrase "Grand Turismo Omologato" word for word it would say..

    "Grand Touring Accredited"

Entering the word "Omologato" in the Altavista translator (Italian to English) returns the word "Accredited"

The term was used by Ferrari and then adopted by other manufactures.

    GTO- Gran Turismo Omolagto

In the 50's and 60's.. even later, to run in the Grand Touring classes at LeMans and elsewhere a certain level of production was required. This required certification, a process known as Homologation (Homologate-: SANCTION, ALLOW; especially : to approve or confirm officially)
Many Manufacturers built homologation specials, eg.BMW 3.0CSL,Porsche 934 & 935, even the mighty 917 had to be produced in qty (25, I think) Ferrari used the name GTO on several occasions.
It has often been bastardised notably by Pontiac in the '60s and now applied to a "cut & shut" Commodore!!

    Thanks..there is more!!

A funny story from the '60s when Ford USA wanted to run American Falcons on the Monte Carlo rally, they needed to homologate something like 250 cars, the FIA were used to dealing with Euro sports car makers that could take up to a year to build that many cars.
They were dumbfounded when Ford returned the production paperwork in a matter of days!! Ford even worked lightweight panels into their production schedule. They had planned to use aluminium bumpers as well but an over zealous Quality inspector had them scrapped because the "chrome" plating was below standard!!
