    Hi all,

I have taken the shifter apart for the shifter bushing replacement because of some serious play in the shifter (10cm plus).

1st problem: I cannot get a damn nut undone (see green arrow in pic). Tried for a good 1/2 hour to no avail. Is there anything special I need to know about this nut?

2nd problem: I believe that changing the shifter bushed will not fix the problen. I think the problem is a "bush" that the red arrow in the picture is pointing at.

q: is it possible to replace this bush? If so does someone know the part number or something? As you can tell it is really deteriorated and I can see the play in the shifter from it.

    Thanks.

have you made sure you're un-doing the right way

May seem obvious but because it's underneath remember that you'll want to be undoing the other way.

Also changing the shifter bushes will fix the problem. That bush you point to commoly gets tatty-looking like that but doesn't really cause sloppiness problems, you'll find that when you get it off it actually has metal in it and that will still be seating fine.

Thanks, i'll give it a go

I'm positive that I'm undoing it the right way - i'm using a socket, so u cant really mess that up. Unless of course the thread is backward or something weird like that!?

I'll give it another go and see what happens.

    Thanks,

    Ben

belive it or not it is acctualy possibe to replace the shiffter bushings without taking that screw off. its not easy but it can be done, i sprayed the bushes with wd-40 and then pushed them in and some how made it all fit.

    good luck Paul

All done, just needed to hold my mouth right ;)

Mr Trickle: You are right - all i needed was to replace the bushes, it's as good as new now.

    that's good news

Yeh they make a huge difference. When I got my car I was very disappointed with the shifter feel until I discovered this fix.

Anyone know where to buy these bushes?

Anyone know where to buy these bushes? My car also has 10cm + play in the gear stick and would like to replace the bushes.

    What about in neutral?

Mine has lots of left/right play when in neutral. Will changing the bushes also fix that?

    cheers

    shifting slack

I had this very problem, terrible play in and out of gear. The link bushes had been substituted for electrical tape, replaced them for bout $8 from nissan dealer(and a whole lot of awkward fiddling). Check the shift mount too, mine was sheared straght through. This is the rubber about an inch thick that allows movement in the shift spocket, I also replaced this $128. But they were both 100% worth it.

    No I mean...

I know it's supposed to go left/right in neutral haha.

But what I mean is there is play left/right where it will wobble on its own - totally zero resistance.
