Cleaning Foam Air filter

Fellow Zedders: I've got a 200mm HKS (green) foam/pod type filter on my TT, and it disintegrated when I tried to clean it (with kero). Looks like it's not the right stuff to clean a foam filter, eh?

I've picked up a new element from TTZED, and it's completely dry, so I assume it needs oiling to give good filtering. Now the questions:

    (1) what should I oil it with? K&N oil or something more or less exotic?

    (2) when it's a bit dirty, what should I clean it with? Not kero by the look of things!

I've looked in the tech section and searched the back articles, but haven't found the answers to such low-brow questions. Any advice would be valued.

    Cheers,
    Clyde (aka Wildman)

    I've got the same filter

And as I understand it, the new one goes straight in, and when it gets clogged and crap you buy a new one. I don't believe they're re-oilable.

    Usually clean with mineral turps

then re-oil. Its a special type of oil but easy to get. Have a look at www.uniflow.com.au/

    HKS filters are not re-usable.......>>

Once the foam gets dirty you throw it away and replace it.

Just as Wykked says - HKS filter elements

are throwaways. They are NOT supposed to be oiled prior to use, and not designed to be washed later. HKS recommend replacement after 5000km, but I replace mine ummm ... errr ... about every 20000km. TTZ sells the replacements.

1 little bonus - reference to Victorian EPA legislation revealed that non-oiled type pod filters can be fitted legally; oiled type cannot, so I have the answer ready if and when someone tries to ping me for it!!!!!!

There have been some often referred to comments on the net about HKS filters not being effective, but I have ignored them.

SMF 'Super Mega Flow' range of HKS Air Intakes, in either 200mm or 150mm sizes. The HKS Super Mega flow element is a 2-layer, dual density, wet-type polyurethane filter that uses an impregnated viscid fluid to attract and stop damaging dirt particles from entering your engine. This bonded fluid allows use of a larger pore design for maximum airflow without sacrificing filtration. Standard in the Super Mega Flow is the HKS trademark green filter element. Replacement filter elements are available in Green, Purple, Blue, Yellow and Orange

The only full dry paper filter i know is apexi. Either way the epa can go pick on skylines, silvias and the other ricers out there because all our goodies are hidden under the centre panel.

    You are correct.......>>

The HKS filter does use oil to assist it to trap the dirt, but since it feels dry to the touch (unlike a conventional oiled filter) it is easier to debate the fact with an officer of the law.
