driving from work to home which is only about 3-4km the temp. needle went from just above C to just below H. It never goes further than half way.

I had coolant leaking from the back of the engine and a loud hissing noise coming from a hose there somewhere (i think it was a hose), but couldn't really see where it was coming from.

Can anyone suggest what this may be? I think it is just a heater hose but not sure what parts etc I will need and how hard it is to get to.

Hope you didnt lose too much coolant

the fact that the gauge moved indicates that your losing coolant enough to make your temps go over 104degrees? (i think thats when the gauge starts moving).

this happen to me two weeks agoclick me, if its not the heater hose its these two even harder to reach hoses. I would fill the water in radiator up start the car and pay attention to where its comming from. On my car it came from the heater inlet dripped down to the exhaust pipes and made a sizzling noise.

    No didn't lose much coolant...

I thought that i had lost a lot because of the high temps but i guess it was just a lack of pressure that was stopping the coolant circulating as it should? I still have a fair bit of coolant in the system.

What hoses are there at the back of the engine that I should be looking for?

Under plenum hoses, heater hoses and hoses to turbo...

Hopefully just the heater hose which is common and easier fixed than the other two. I've written a tech article on overheating which might help

    Thanks good article....

hopefully it is just the heater hose, i can't see myself doing the turbo or under the plenum.

I'll have a crack at it now...

    Problem fixed... for now...

at first looks there was coolant build up around the top heater hose pipe and what looked like a trail of coolant down the metal pipe it goes onto. The hose clamp was pretty much totally loose so I was like sweet, thats the problem, lets get a new worm clamp clean up the metal pipe and check the hose (still in good knick), put the new clamp on, tighten it all back up, put everything back together, start it up and no leaks... from that pipe.

One of the little hoses, that come off the metal pipe the heater hose goes onto, had a small knick out of it right on the flange of the metal pipe, just enough for coolant to slowly but steadily pour out of it. With hardly and time to spare and the rubber pipe still in pretty good knick, we pulled it all apart and proceded to pull of the grandest of dodgies ever dodgied. Because the knick was at such a good spot in such a bad spot, it seemed like a good idea just to push the rubber hose on another 1-2cm enough to get it behind the flange of the metal pipe and then move the clamp up over the small knick. This was excrutiatingly fiddly because of the lack of room to play with... 2 people, 2 sets of long pointy nose pliers, a flat head screwdriver and a torch later, it was done.

No leaks at all now after a decent test drive, I'll still keep my eye on it but should be good for a while yet.

I do wonder though whether 'me old man slipped with the flat head screwdriver in the first place and pierced a hole in the teeny weeny rubber pipe? That I'll never know... and he'll certainly never own up to it.
