Knock sensor replacement is not cheap, so while my car was slightly pinging in the 37 degree heat today, I thought to myself, well whats stopping someone from actually attaching the knock sensor to the side of the block? My plan would be to attach the sensor somewhere where it is in direct contact with the block, ie finding a bolt or some other means of attachment. On an NA this should be quite easy because the sides of the engine are quite easy to get to from the bottom. Now the question for you mechanical guru's..... can anyone see any major problems with this??? Also, most cars these days have 2 knock sensors. I dont know enough about electronics to even suggest I'm right, but is it possible to wire essentially 2 knock sensors into the one connector that goes back to the ECU?? ie, one sensor on either side of the block? My pinging probs occur in the 2500-3000 range, and only when really hot, so the bypass thing just doesnt cut it anymore. Any advice would be great. Cheers

Might be worth investigating the cause of the knocking also? Heat is only a contributing factor I thought. You might be running too lean A/F, timing too far advanced, poor octane fuel, accellerating in high gear @ low speed etc.
Heres a little toy that you will have lots of fun with Believe it or not but this little black box of leds knock link, got very high ratings back in it's days and was #1 tool for picking up detonation. There is now a revised version that comes in the form of a gauge, it looks exactly like this lambda link but obviously connected to the knock sensor wires instead. It has some sort of microproccessor that auto adjust sensitivity according to your car. Not only does the new version have a cool 270degree sweep needle, but according to how much noise the det sensor is picking up the back light colours change as seen in the pick. When it is extreme detonation a warning led will light up.
checked it all...... and its driving me nuts.... fuel pressure, fuel dampner, fuel regulator, static timing, injectors etc etc. Mechanically, the engine is sound. I think it really comes down to the custom ECU chip I have at the moment. I agree, it needs work in area's and maybe some more timing taken out. However, dyno time is expensive and I'm real busy at the moment.... Another contributing factor may be that I have no EGR. The boys on twinturbo.net seem to think that the loss of the egr contributes to pinging. In conjunction with the fact that I currently have no knock sensor to retard the timing, and a custom ecu chip, this may be a possible reason. Who knows. Its definitely heat related, because all through winter, no probs, and it only pings on 30+ days. Cheers
looks interesting...... i'll check it out, but i still want a functioning det sensor. A detection device is cool, but I dont really need one, I know when my car pings. Wheras, the det sensor will hopefully do its job and retard the timing a little when it picks up pinging.. Cheers
I'm still trying to work out if the sound I occasionally hear is pinging or simply engine/exhaust noise. Nissport adjusted Timing and said all OK. They did all compression tests and said car is perfect, but I still get a similar sound occasionally. I think I hear a noise and assume the worst... its probably just cables, throttle etc moving and working when under hard accelleration. And just noise from engine.... B.
That said Mark... for interest sake, how loud is pinging. With my noises I have to have windows up, no radio, no talking, no air cond and I still only just hear a noise. B.
Pinging when its hot makes sense I mean the air density is lower at high temperatures so that will lean out your mixture. My NA does it as well, I have to either put my foot down harder or back off. What I dont get is WTF the existing knock sensor is doing if it isnt retarding the timing when it hears this ! If I can hear it why cant the sensor and get the ECU to adjust the timing ? I look foward to being able to afford the Hitech add on box so I can get the fuel and air map fixed cause I think that is the issue.
Pinging is Pinging BAF Its unmistakable, doesnt need to be loud to know what it is, it will bugger up your engine just as quick regardless of the noise level.
I wonder how much it would cost? doesnt say on the page. But the knock link is a great idea.....possible future group buy? :LOL: Max:thumbsup:
What about this location for knock sensor placement? Was under the car today doing an oil change, and looking for somewhere to put a det sensor.. On the driver side of the motor, just sort of above the oil filter I found this hole (red arrow), with a thread, on the side of the block. I dont know what was there previously, but since i've had a lot of stuff removed or modified, its now free. Its basically right on the block. I think it should work a treat. Trouble is, its only on one side but i'm assuming that pinging on the other side will transfer and be detected. Also, electronic guru's, anyone have any idea on my previous suggestion of running 2 knock sensors? Cheers
loudness I have to have my radio off to hear it, but when it happens I can hear it, windows down or open. Also, now that I know what I'm listening for, I could hear it with the radio on. Its a god awful noise baff, that no engine should make and sends shivers down my spine. I dont drive when it happens. I pull over and retard the timing and take out my det sensor bypass (effectively causing a code 34 and retarding the timing). I know the sound because I heard my car ping when being tuned on the dyno. It really just sounds like a whole bunch of loose coins or marbles rattling away behind the firewall. Cheers

well.... if its happening before 3000 revs the knock sensor should pick it up. Thats what its designed to do. have you checked that your knock sensor works??? Yours may be buggered and not doing anything at all.... Cheers
Thanks Mark... I'm at Nissport in about 3 weeks for new rotors. Will get them to look at it again. Last time Joe was sure it was exhaust noise. But whether he heard the same noise, I'm not sure. Cheers, B.
