Every time I filled up my tank and if I left the car under the hot sun, I find petrol leaking near the filler. And if I unscrew the filler cap, petrol start to pour out. Is it a common problem due to expansion of the fuel when hot under the sun or is there a problem with the ventilation system. Any one has similar experience and know the cure other than not filling the tank too full.

I have the same problem with my Z. If i park it with a full tank of fuel. ie just filled up it leaks out when i park it within 10 min. so now i just make sure if filling from empty i dont put more then 50 leters in. or park with the fuel cap a the highest point so it cant run out.

if you get an answer to this it will be good for me as well.

    The problem is......

that the silicon or whatever was used to put in the filler neck has degraded and can now vent to the atmosphere. Fuel will actually eat away the silicon over time. This allows the fuel to come rushing out (fuel tank is pressurised I believe). Happened to me about 2 years ago. The solution is to take out the filler neck, apply this stuff called Sikaflex which can be bought at hardware stores and then reinsert the filler. If your unsure how to do this, any competent zed mechanic will do it in about 15 minutes.

    Cheers

    Dont use Sikaflex unless

you want the problem to reoccur!
    Use Selleys Knead It
This is a two part polymer that sets as hard as metal. I did mine about 3 years ago & no problems. Previously I had used Sikaflex & it was eaten away in a couple of months.

Will check with Sika & Loctite Reps -

Deal with them thru work. Will check out both Sika & Loctite next week. Get back to you if they have a fuel resistant sealant suitable.
    Cheers, Dean.

    Recommended Sealants

Spoke with Sika rep. Product to use is called Sikaflex Tank. Only available in 600ml sausage but about same price as some of their other smaller size sealants. Should be able to order it through Coventry Fasteners.

Also Spoke with Loctite rep. He recommends Loctite No.3 Aviation Gasket if you want non-hardening, or Loctite No.4 Gasket Sealant if you want hardening.

All three of the above are rated for unleaded.

    Cheers, Dean.

    The best sealant

Hey if you know anyone in the aircraft maintenance industry, get them to get you some PR14.2 sealant. We use it to seal fuel tanks and alike. It is a two part sealent. I have never seen or used anything like it before, it is great but don't get it on you it apparently causes cancer.
