This has probably been discussed before but recent buyers of Z32's (like me) might not be aware of it. Anyway I was reading my owners book the other night and it said that if you lose your key and you know its code then you can get a lot of locksmiths to cut one up for you from his Nissan codes. This is excellent because you are not copying another key which is probably quite worn but getting a new exact replica of the key of the car when it was new. But then it went on to say that you will find the code stamped on the side of an original key. Alarm Bells!!!!!!!!! I looked at my key and sure enough there was a code on it. This means that you could be at a pub etc. put down your keys and someone picks them up and memorises the code number then gets one cut for himself for your car. So I bought a blank from my local Nissan dealer and then took it to a car locksmith gave him the code and he happily cut me a key for my car for $12. I asked him about security and he said that he had no legal obligation to check ownership. Wow!! So if you are using an original owners key maybe you ought to have another made up (preferably by someone who has the Nissan codes) and leave the other one at home in a safe place. Just a thought anyway or maybe I'm just a little bit paranoid?

    Key codes

Good point. I never thought of it that way. Got one cut last month after I bought a key blank from TTZ. I suppose I don't think like a crim... They did ask me if I wanted the code stamped on the key and I said no as the code was written down at home and I only use that key now. The spare is in the safe at home..

Getting key codes without the key

I learned from bitter experience with a Silvia where the key was lost (and then later found sitting under a UPS box! ) that if you take out the driver's door key barrel and take it to a lock smith, they can get the codes from that and cut up a new key.

I'm not sure if anyone else has this but......

All I can use my keys for is starting the car. I can't unlock the doors with them, all the locks have been disabled and only keyless entry is available...

I guess that takes away the worry of people getting into your car with another key.:D Though if my batteries run out I'm stranded.:(

    key locks V remote

I like that idea for added security against a 'slim jim' but if someone wants really in, they just break a window/targa etc.

I wouldn't worry too much, remote central locking units are pretty reliable these days. I haven't used my key to unlock a door since I bought the car. Just diarise to change your remote batteries every six months if you're really worried.

Having just pulled out most of the drivers side under- dash and the key unit, reinforces to me just how insecure a key ignition unit is.

Come to think of it the way the alarm people wired my immobiliser, I was able to bypass it in 10 minutes when I had a really closer look.

Not now though, I have done some very creative wiring !;)

Next time you have a door trim off.......>>

Have a look at how the locking mechanism, and connecting rods are routed. It would be next to impossible to open the zed with a slim jim or coat hanger. The two rods that run from the door latch to the handle on the armrest actually run on the inside of the door, between the trim and the door, and can't be reached from outside.

Is there any way of getting the code without the original key?

I bought a key blank from TTZ but unfortunately couldn't get a perfect cut from my non original key and it wont fit.

A good locksmith should be able to read the code..>>

just by looking at the key even if it is worn.

Good point. Re getting keys cut from codes,

any decent locksmith will be able to determine the key code from any working key, whether it's an original one or not, or worn or not (within reasonable limits). From there, it's just a simple matter of cutting a blank to the code, not copying an existing key. It costs a bit more, but you end up with a 'new' key, not a copy of a worn one.

Man, you really need to look at the ignition barrel 1st

All you have to do is unplug the wiring plug off the back of the ignition barrel and click that bad boy over and away you go. Absolutely NO NEED for a key at all, only a screwdriver.

    thats hecktic...
I need a security system.
My shitty old VN commodore could be broken into and started with nothing more than a screwdriver and about 20 seconds... car security is all about keeping the honest people honest. If someone wants your car, it will be gone, no doubt about it.
