    OK, here's the deal. Started developing a strange noise on Friday night, was gone Saturday. Didn't drive Sunday.
    Drove this morning and it was there but intermittent. Then this arvo on the way home it was completely constant. It is a sort of high pitched oscillating noise. I am thinking (hoping) it is maybe the throw out bearing (which would be lovely - cheap and relatively easy) as it goes away most times when you put in the clutch.

    This is an mp3 of it sitting in the garage. As a bit of an idea what's going on, I started off just moving around the engine bay. I then put the cam (which I used for the sound) on top of the car (which is why it goes quieter due to partial occlusion). I then preceded to put the clutch in a couple of times (when the gay sound goes away).

    What are peoples thoughts??

    Thankyou in advance, BADLY need help.

    If it goes away when pressing the clutch....

    ....then it is probably not as dire as it sounds, time for some new clutch gear

    couple of things to look for

    clutch thrust bearing has been mentioned.My money is on that little bugger.Other ones are the idle pulley for the cam belt and a very common one is the A/C bearing it is right at the bottom of the motor at the front and die all ths time.

    bad noise

    A few weeks ago i got my timing belt replaced, then straight after it was replaced i had a similar noise coming from my engine.

    Took it back and turns out it was just the new belt slightly rubbing on something(cant remember what). Anyway it could be as simple as that. I've also been told that sand can gather on the belt and cause that noise too.

    My bet its the thow-out bearing but I would just check its not the

    crankshaft thrust bearing.
    :unsure: Sorry if you know what to do but if you dont here is a procedure for you
    Use some lever to push back on your harmonic balancer (motor stationary of course) and somehow measure the position relative to some other part of the engine but parrallel to the crank centre line.:rolleyes:

    Next push the clutch in and note if the balancer has moved forward ... if so measure the distance in order to calculate the end play and see how it fares with the manual...I know its not much but if it is then this may be your problem! :(

    But it does sound like the throw out bearing :rolleyes: I hope it is for your sake!

    regards John :cool:;
