Q ... Changing Oil in a Manual Gearbox

I just bought some Redline lightweight shockproof gear oil from Simon at TTZ to fix the occasional crunching into 4th and 5th (guaranteed if I change quickly). I'd like to do the change myself.

    Is this easy to do?

As I don't have access to a hoist, what's the best approach. Is it best to fill from the top -i.e. remove the console?

What do I have to remove from underneath (hopefully not exhaust bits)?

I have a fluid pump (thingy) that sucks through one hose and pumps out the other. Is that useful?

    Also, I have 4 x jack stands.

Your advice / experience is much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Peter

Your a lucky man.. I have just witnessed this

I also got the tranny fluid changed when i got my auto to man conversion and i saw how it was done... although the car was on the hoist i could see that you can quite easily do it with out one if you put the car on the jack stands.. then all you have to do is undo the drain plug, then whe all the old oil is out put the plug back in, then on one of the sides there is a filler plug undo that and using ure "manual pump thingo" pump the new stuff in... to easy, nothing else had to be removed.

    The fill point is.......>>

On the passangers side of the box, and you should make sure you can get the nut out of it before you drain the oil from the box.

Thanx Peter - good advice - I'll loosen up first!

  6. Kalus

    Kalus Finally dug myself out

The hardest part is getting the oil back in!!!

Last time I used a pump from a 20 litre drum to do it. Originally I drilled 2 holes in the lid of the Redline container, ran the hose from the Nissan compressor into one hole and another hose from the other hole (into bottom of container) to the filler in the gearbox. Bit of bluetack/tape/chewing gum to seal the hoses into the lid, fire up the compressor and in about 15 minutes it's full.
Just in case you don't have a pump handy :)

The work shop manual says some thing....

About there being a pump in the gear box, and you have to short some thing out near the diff to make the pump come on to drain it all out?

Not sure I understand ... More detail please

What pump from a 20 litre drum?
    What Nissan compressor?

I have a manual pump (thingy), but if there's an easier way, I'd be keen to use that.

    A little confused,

    Peter

manual pump is easiest, as long as the hose on it

can fit into the side of the box.

    Your not wrong!:D...

...Im gonna try that next time Im filling a gearbox. Nothing worse than laying under the car getting sore arms pumping oil while slowly getting covered in the stinky crap. If you ever end up with the oil on clothing Ive found the best thing to do is take to it with degreaser and then a hose. A washing machine usually cant get it out alone, especially the smell:sick:

    Hi Peter,
You don't know about the Nissan Compressor, because you have a 2+2(the coupes have a deflated spare wheel and need a compressor{supplied with the coupe} to inflate it.)
Kalus pumped air into the top of the oil drum via a plastic tube (above the oil level), and fed that oil into the G/box via another tube feeding from the bottom of the oil, using the tyre pump(compressor). Very clever for a Queenslander(I can understand your confusion:D)

    Ouch!..Ouch!...Stop hitting me Kyne!....#@*%$@#:(:(

I know what hes talking about...

....you should have an electric tyre pump in the back of your zed under the spare wheel. If you dont you can go down to supercheap or similar and buy a compressor for less than $20 that will fit under the spare. Anyway, as he said, drill 2 holes into the oil bottle cap and jam the compressors hose into one hole, and then jam a decent length of clear vinyl tube into the other hole, making sure that the tube will reach down to the bottom of the bottle(and making sure it is a decent diameter, ie bigger than the stuff used for your windscreen washer squirters). Stick the other end of the tube into the gearbox filler hole, then plug in the compressor and sit back while it does all the hard work for you. If there is not a very good seal for the tube and compressor hose into the cap you can plug up air leaks with some bluetac

    Ah .... Now I understand ... and agree it's a clever solution

Maybe I should just check out that local Supercheap store for a pump.

Thanks all for your help !!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

    Yeah I've done this...

    its not too hard.

Draining it is easy and straight forward... loosening the fill plug can be a bit trickier. Mine was that tough I had to put the car up on ramps, put a socket in the fill plug, put the jack under the handle of the socket wrench and use the weight of the car on the jack to get enough force to loosen the fill plug.

Once I did that, I got one of those pumps you attach to a cordless or power drill, put one end of hose in the oil, the other in the fill hole and pull the trigger on the cordless drill and watch it fill up. That easy. You can get the drill pumps from bunnings warehouse... only about $15 i think maybe a bit more. Well worth it though, makes it a pretty easy job.

Completed oil change. It went like a dream :), but I noticed

that the clutch slave cylinder is starting to weep:(. I checked the fluid level in the master cylinder, and sure enough, it's down a little. It doesn't seem too bad at the moment.

Is replacing the clutch slave cylinder an easy job? Does anyone have any pointers?

As for changing the gearbox oil, the fill and drain bolts in the gearbox were quite easy to undo. I seem to remember the previous owner had a thrust bearing fail just before I bought the car about 35k ago, so these haven't been in since new. The fill bolt BTW is on the driver's side.

I used the compressor method to re-fill the gearbox and like Kalus said, it only took about 10-15 mins to fill - too easy..

I know changing the gearbox oil probably seems quite trivial to most, but it's a start and I would like to do most of my own maintenance. As well as saving money, I get a sense of satisfaction in having done it myself.

    cheers,

    Peter

Well done, first step on the way to bigger ...>>

    maintenance jobs on the zed.:zlove:

Clutch slave cylinder should be easy to replace, just need another person to to help bleed. I'm lazy, I got ACT Brakes to replace mine.

    Pump for 2 seater?

I bought a pump for my two seater only later to discover that my space saver doesn't need to be inlfated! Apparently its used in its semi flat configuration, or so I'm told, as when I tried to pump it up it went horribly egg shaped out to the side.

    Cheers
    Geoff the deflated one

You need to run about 65psi in your spare ...>>

I think you've been missinformed about not needing inflation. Unless you have some very special spare???
