hey guysthe JBL 6 X 4's i had in the rear of my 2+2 just blew up. i was wondering if someone had mounted 6 X 9's in the rear of their Z. i just think that if i get the larger speakers in there i will be happy with the bass and not need to fork out for a sub.thanks guys

i think jedi has done it. tried to do

it myself last weekend. can be done but takes a lot of screwing around, especially if you want it to still look stock (which i do).The easier way of doing it is to have the speaker sunken somewhat within the tower. This is feasible from a mounting point of view. Acoutically i think i will be terrible however. In this position it would be very hard to isolate the top and bottom of the speaker, and will result in poor sound, especially when it comes to bass reproduction. The alternative is to have it flush with the top of the tower (as the stock speaker is). This would be much easier to isolate acoustically, thus giving a better sound. It would also be more aestheically pleasing. However, i'm finding that its really pushing the limits for space in this position. There are some cables (for the boot release and back lights and water pump i think), which i will have to relocate to make space for the speaker. If i do this it shouldn't be to hard to mount, using some MDF (and some further screwing around).   I think if i can't get this to work, i'm just going to get smaller speakers. Also, you have a 2+2 which may (or may not) have more space to work with than my two seater.

  3. why bother?

dude you can get a decent sub setup for not much these days... i had trouble fitting the 4" from my 3 way splits set up in the back.. but it could be done if 1. you know how to fiberglass or 2. you have good tin snips...loland 6x9's will only ever be bassy in a sealed or ported mini box BTW

yeah but i don't really want a sub floating

around in the back. your right about the 6x9s requiring sealed or properly ported enclosure for bass. whether this can be done in the stock positions, i'll find out soon.

    get the tin snips out......

It can be done. Both Steven and I have put 6x9s in our zeds but it requires a fair bit of hacking at the metal brace which supports the original speaker. Also make sure that you don't buy a speaker which sits quite deep (does that make sense??) In the 2+2s on the passenger side there is the inlet for the fuel which you will need to sit the speaker ontop of (you'll see when you pull your interior out), so if you get a speaker with a very big magnet, it might not fit that side. We basically took my car down to the shops with no rear interior and got the sales guy to take the ones we were looking at out to my car to make sure there was enough depth to fit them. If I remember coorrectly, I think some of the Kenwoods were a bit too big depth wise to fit on the passenger side. We went for Alpines in the end (I think....).But it can be done. They are just a rediculously tight fit. :xIf you want a more technical explanation, email Steven (that's also his nick). Lou :)

    Looked into this

i was going to add 2 6x9s in between the two subs ,but ended up replacing the factory speakers with a jbl speaker for rear fill, so if you have to put them in get two boxes made up for the corners and fit them there that way theres no hacking the factory panels.

    Yes I have done this.....

but it is a lot of screwing around. The only reason I did this was because I had some 6x9's from my other car and couldnt afford new speakers. Plus, my 6x9's are expensive alpine ones. I had to basically stuff around a lot to make them fit in the stock locations. They sound ok to me. but I'm no music guru. Plus they are really just fillers as I have the music faded forward and the sub in the boot delivers all the bass i need.Cheers

    went to strathfield today

to see how much it would cost for them to install 6x9's in the rear for me. to my great surprise they have done it before and it costs about $30-$40 to modify the stock speaker holes. then you can put them in yourself :D.
    thanks guysjames
