Just took my car in for a service.. This is what i've been told needs to be done..Rear Main Seal - $886 Leaking Front Brake Hose - $124 Front Discs and Pads - $555Now i'm almost crying because I just bought the damn thing 6 months ago. I'm hoping these are inflated prices because Nissan are servicing it, so...DOES ANYONE KNOW A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE????? :`( If you know a cheaper alternative in melbourne, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.. boohooo
ok read in-->>> Rear main seal im pretty sure you can do yourself if you can get the car up high enough, the part costs $50 but labour is around 400 so i dont know where the other 400 bucks is coming from? I think that pays for the mechanics lunch + booze Leaking front brake hose - no idea in whats involved to fix it. sorryIf your rotors can be machined you can get new pads + machining done for $180 in coburg.
pull out quickly $886 to replace a main seal is damn right expensive. I wouldn't mind doing one of those a day for the rest of life if I got paid $886 to do it. I think the seal itself is $50 and then the rest is labour cost and I fail to see where 8 hours work is assuming they charge $100/hr like the ripoff merchants that nissan franchises are.
Phew.. I'm still pissed off, but at least it's good to hear those costs are a farking ripoff..I should sue nissan for giving me a heart attack.I would of thought a rear main seal leak would of been covered under warranty.. I'm going to check up on that.
Know how you feel.... I've gotta get my rear main seal (If I lived in VIC we could've made a day of it)=) And I've got the cam seals to go in as well. Yeah TTZed.com stock the rear main and most other parts so check out their site. But labour is a killer! especially when you've got a $50 part and a $400 labour bill! But such is owning a Zed...
Hehehe.. I just got the cam seals done 3 months ago.. Our cars must of been built on the same day.. I got a quote at Hoppers Crossing Nissan to replace the rear main seal $400-450.. A big difference to the $880 price tag from Brighton Nissan.. The name of the suburb must increase the price or something.. :x The guys there were really nice and helpfull, and he went on telling me about the timing belt even though i didn't ask him, and he said he'll check it when I come in, so I'm very happy with that.I'll let you know what they're like for all you westerners out there
One thing with the rear main you might.... want to check out is the clutch... because if it's been leaking enough engine oil, it's probably going to be leaking onto the clutch and could cause some problems with clutch slippage and possibly other gearbox problems, just what I've been told, so it's probably gotta be high on the list of things to do. I'm also getting the timing belt done when the seals come off aswell. Yeah it's possible that our cars where made on the same day... Hang on....how many kms have you done??=)
138,000kms Was the car yours when the 100,000kms clicked over?? If not, then can you be sure it's been done? The rear main isn't involved in that but, more problems could result if it hasn't been done. Just a thought.
HMM Are you talking about the timing belt? Yeah I'm not sure whether it's been changed, so we'll have a look at it on Wednesday, but I hope it's been done.. How much does a timing belt change usually cost?
Well, you could probably tell if the timing belt was done by looking at the rest of the front of the engine (drive belts), I mean a 'Gates' Timing Belt is like $95 from TTZ so it's a small expense for something that can cause massive problems. Just hope mine doesn't fail on the way to the mechanic:s But yeah check your clutch man, cuz, if that's been damaged because of the rear main then you could be up for a new clutch/parts if it can't be machined etc.
i've got an auto.. hehehehe but Yeah i'll get the guys to check out the timing belt. They said the older timing belts have different numbers on them so we'll see how we go.Good luck with your zed man.. hopefully you don't need it, otherwise you pay out of your arse with these things 8D
try nissport. don't have number handy, do a search for nissport. give joe a call and ask him for a figure on the rear main seal. But if those numbers bring you to tears, you should probably sell the Z. I had to cough up ~$4k within a month of buying mine.
I think from memory, its $250 to get the rear main seal done at Nissport. I got mine done when i got my new clutch installed so no extra labour charge. =) Max
Here's my advice... ...the rear main seal can be done yourself if you have the right gear, such as a quality hydraulic jack, a gearbox cradle attachment for it, and some good high car stands and some torque wrenches, plus a good set of spanners and a socket set (all metric). When you get the seal done, to save yourself some money down the track, get a full clutch kit installed at the same time, and replace the rear heater hoses also, that way the gearbox should not need to come off again till you need a new clutch.
Learn as much as you can about this car >>> I didn't know Jack about cars before I bought this one. Learn as much as you can about this car (from this great forum and also from twinturbo.net) and cars in general, and you will find you will be able to tell whether a mechanic is speaking a load of BS or not. And you will also know that sometimes what a mechanic says MUST be replaced is either more BS, or can wait a while, depending upon what it is. Any problem to do with cooling though, for example, I would have fixed straight away. Go to as many meets as you can too and talk to Z owners. :YD Good luck Peter
Some help for you..... dont go to where you got those quotes. Nissport will repair your rear main seal for about $250 (thats how much mine cost) and your other problems as well. What you must get looked at ASAP is whether the 100k service has been done. If it hasnt, get it done immediately. Once again, Nissport will do a reasonable price, but a proper full 100K service will cost you about $1000-$1500.
