Hey guys. Just been down to the paint shop. There is a bit of a problem painting my front fascia. The paint is not sticking to the plastic very well and is forming little holes in the paint. This is despite heaps of primer. The painter said he doesnt think its a good idea using an adhesive promotor as then the paint will crack if the fascia bends.Anyone had any experience with painting these and got any recommendations for what works best??

you need to use a anti-static surface primer

and are you using a uerathane bonding agent and paint flex additive

    zisluv read this please

i work for myself and have been a spraypainter for the last 20 years, firstly the little holes you talk about sound like solvent boil and absolutely nothing to do with the fact that they are painting over eurothane solvent boil occurs when the coats are applied to close and the thinners doesnt have enough time to escape and therefore pop through the skinned paint, it needs to have flexcoat added and to be primed in 2 pack primer not 1k like they are probably trying , the topcoat should not need additive as it doesnt flex and 2 pack already has a small amount of give in it

There is a product u can use

Its called plastic primer, in a spray can alongside the car paints, its clear and etches the surface to accept paint readily and is flexible.
    cheers

    Plastic bars

I use spies hecker brand paint at my crash shop. Recently I purchased a 2000 series front bar from nissan which is PUR (polyurethane) also. We paint about 10 bars a week normally and very rarely have a problem with peeling paint. However on painting my bar I had serious adhesion problems. We use a plastic primer and cleaned bar thoroughly. I called the spies rep out to see problem and of course they said it was probaly release agent still coming out of the bar. Told us to strip bar (what a prick of a job as not all of it comes off easily)clean and use a different primer, then paint again. Well we did that and the bar peeled again in odd spots. This has all happened in the last week BTW. So I called spies out again abused them and they kept saying zed bars have always been very hard to paint??. Anyway yesterday I told then to take my bar away and they can paint it themselves. I have had a man spend about 20 hours on this bar and it is getting very costly. They returned my bar last nite, and now it is stuffed. To strip the bar they used a special paint stripper for plastics (which I tried years ago with bad results) and now bar is warped. Spies have ordered a new bar from japan now and I will be getting them to paint the next one for me so I dont go through this pain. Bad problem is apparently japan is on holidays at the moment so order will no be processed for 2 weeks . I contacted another paint supplier PPG ( they bought out the dulux brand a american company) . They also commented on that zed bars and also maxima bars being very hard to paint. They recommended I use D816 (A medium build bar primer). Anyway to youre problem Zisluv To paint plastics you have to clean bar to remove the release agent then apply a primer to promote adhesion. In my research and talking to a plastic expert, I was told it isnt so much the release agent in the bar but the high o2 content which most bar primers modify and make them cling to the pores better ??(I'm a crashy not a chemist guyz). Since talking to this plastic expert we have changed a few of our methods and paint peeling is very rare now except for the above !. I would recommend using a flex additive though in the color and clear coats. The primer coat is very thin and so will not cause cracking but the applications of color and a clearcoat will give a large build. And of course when we scrape that kerbing the bar will flex a large amount and you will get fracturing in the color. If you want some more info I dont have a scanner but can fax you copies of a book (The Plastics Fix by Graham Mc Donagh the plastic expert I mentioned) on methods of plastic repairs. If you wish the whole book I can send it to you and you can read up on it and send it back. My Wings West is painted and fitted

Yes this is a small problem. The fact is that you will probably find that a few coats are required. I'm not totally sure as to the number of coats of primer, paint etc were used on my fascia. I do have a little section on my side skirt where these little holes do appear and i know what you mean. My paint hasn't cracked but again i can't give you details as to the exact paint used. My zed is a stock red though.Hope it all works out for you Nathan!Hayden :-Z
