What's the current train of thought on turbo repair or replacement, My D/S turbo seals have failed and to not complicate an already shit situation I want either a direct replacement, or overhaul the existing one. What are we doing currently?
Been there done that, still happy. Surprised they're still that cheap. I paid a little less for OEM CHRA's 11 years ago when the exchange rate was good. Baron - I feel for you mate. Engine out, sorry. The passenger side turbo can be replaced from underneath, the driver's side can not.
I'm years out of touch mate, Hypergear are still going? At last count they were offering high flow versions and the forum was skeptical about that
I hav used GCG, Hypergear, and Precision Turbos for rebuilds. The service that I was most happy with was Precision. Why? Because they did a very thorough job including including testing the wastegates and sent me back a pair of fully assembled turbochargers ready to bolt to the motor for a very reasonable price.
another very good place to have turbos rebuilt. And who did my turbos for my tt 300zx Is hi spool industries at Narrellan. Top bloke... lots of experience in the industry.
Both turbos can be replaced without pulling the engine (I've done it) but it quicker and easier to pull the engine.
They are still going. I had 2 different turbos of theirs on my skyline and have no complaints. Prabath made something like 600rwkw with a pair of hypergear turbos.
That's good to hear, sounds like they're working well. Longevity was the worry for Zeds because it's engine out to replace them. Cheers.
For anyone here wanting to rebuild their Nissan OEM T25 turbos use these seals to make them bulletproof as well as a 360° thrust bearing. Turbo Turbocharger Turbine Staggered Step Gap Oil Hot Seal Piston Ring T25 T28 | eBay Plenty of rebuild kits on ebay but the step seal(s) which go on the exhaust side will have to be purchased separately. It's not rocket science, happy days!!! I've done it and in my Z for umm.... about 15yrs now
For sure! And for that 'new turbo' look, once the turbos are apart, the housings and the CHRA? can be immersed in diluted acid and the surface rust disappears and they look brand new In terms of balancing, mark the center shaft and turbo front impeller with a center punch prior to disassembly and during turbo assembly, put back together aligning the marks. Simple. If the turbos has been rebuilt before or balanced, they would already have marks on them from the previous build.
