    Egg ....

    Nothing wrong...

    ...with Mobil1.
The 5w is no good, but my Z likes the 15w.

The best advice I ever got re "which oil" was "one that you change when it's due". Generally speaking a 10w40 is a good choice, or if your engine is noisy maybe try a 15w50.

A synthetic oil will generally offer a superior service life.

Nulon do a synthetic 10w40 that you should be able to get from your local auto store. If you're shipping in the penrite "extra 10" range look for 10w50.

5W is excellent......if you intend driving your Z in an extremely cold environment. :p

:sorry: .....that you have to pay for sex.
I can understand some people don't have a choice. :(

However, because they may charge a premium price for that type of service, does not mean you have to pay premium prices for ordinary engine oil. :bash:

Again guys, thanks heaps for the replies, for a newer zed owner its great to have the feedback and knowledge available to me :D

In the end i went for a Penrite Racing 15-50w full synthetic.

Only until servicing it i realized that there was a sticker of the previous oil used in it which happened to be a 15-60w racing oil from Penrite too, its weird because using most oil manufacturers selection tools they all recommend a 15-60w oil, but that always seemed too thick in comparison to the owners manual oil recommendations.

As an afterthought though, the previous owner has been running it on 15-60w for a while now with no issues so i may stick around the 50w or 60w blends, that doesnt mean though it might also run fine on something a little thinner too.

    It's not really a 15w60; it's a 15w50.

Have you got links to any good technical data on that? As far as I've been able to figure out the 'extra ten' thing is just marketing fluff putting the popular trick of stepping viscosity up one onto the label.

Not that I have data, just reading between the lines, it would be lying to advertise the oil as being a viscosity it isn't, but saying it's compatible where an oil one step down is recommended is a pretty safe bet. Especially in japanese and european cars that aren't necessarily designed with an australian summer in mind.

^Its not marketing fluff, it IS an extra 10w. All oils by all companies are periodically tested and graded by a third party to make sure they are all as advertised. Imagine the amount of catastrophic engine failures from crap oil if they didnt!

In my opinion the best BRAND of oil is for the Zeds is the Penrite 10Tenths. This is a high zinc, low shear oil. Oil shear is what allows metal to metal contact in an engine, ie wear. Higher levels of zinc strengthen the bond of the oil at a molecular level, meaning less shearing. There are other brands that do a high zinc oil as well, but Penrite will be the most easily accessible.

As far as the right weight oil, im genuinely suprised no one has asked how many km's your engine has done. Ive always told people, dont take oil advice from someone who hasnt asked your engine condition, KM's and location/climate.

In saying that, as a generalisation:

    - Never put a 0w or 5w oil in your zed unless it is a fresh rebuild with more modern tolerances and an aftermarket oil pump suited to lower cold weights. 0w and 5w oils are too thin for the factory oil pump and will nor circulate properly at start up when the majority of engine wear happens.

    - The recommended oil according to all online guides is 20w50 or 20w60. im not sure this takes the average aussie climate into consideration though.

    - I run Penrite 15w50 10Tenths in my NA (189xxx KM), and so far its the best oil i have experimented with. That is my recommendation for any stock VG over 150,000KM without internal rebuild in my climate (Perth). A VG with less than 150K on the clock or a stock rebuild i would possibly use Penrites 10w40 10Tenths, but only if the owner wants a lower weight oil for reasons like track work etc.

It's fluff in that there's no novel technology giving a 50 weight the 'protection' of a 60, they're just selling you a 60. Stepping up a weight in other brands will make the same difference. There are some other tests that are only required at specific weights so maybe penrite's 10w-40 still passes all the emmisions and longevity stuff a 5w-30 SN has to.

    I use racing 15w/50 with E85

    Normally 10w/40 with 98.

For me the best race oils

The best lubrication oils I ever used were Shell M and Castral R,you have to open the engine oil gallaries up by 20% larger, then age the oil by running the engine up to temp without load then letting the engine cool right down before putting the engine under raceing loads. Never had a race engine fail useing these veg. base oils. There is a problem with this type of lube oil it oxidises after a race weekend. [needs to be changed]:zlove::br:
