Still chasing a rough running issue. Whilst idling I have disconnected the coilpacks one at a time and number 4 is the only one that doesnt make things worse. Ive checked the coilpack and even swapped it with a know good one and that didnt fix it. Have done both of these tests and they tested ok. 1. Turn the key to the on position, Grab your digital multi-meter and test for 12v at the middle terminal of the coil pack connectors (red arrow pictured below) with the negative probe on plenum ground. You should read battery voltage. Next test for 12v at the middle terminal of the coil pack connectors with the negative on the smaller black wire of the coil pack connectors, (place the positive probe on the red arrow here and the negative on the green arrow) [ http://i47.tinypic.com/es2knd.jpg ] this will test your ground circuit. _______________________________ ECU is showing no faults From what ive been reading im now lead to believe it might be a PTU fault? I have a series 2 PTU. I had a read at diagnosing a ptu but its a bit over my head (electrical diagnostics are not my strong point) was just wondering if there was anyone that could point me in the right direction or even better come around and have a look? Maybe rest the coilpack and plug on the engine and see if its getting spark. With plug thread on something earthed.
Some of the coil packs have a little carbon piece and spring up inside the end that contacts the spark plug. Perhaps check that it is there.
Check continuity of your signal wire (red and white I think) back to the PTU and then from the other side of the PTU back to the ECU, then you can rule out the wiring as an issue. checked the carbon connecter inside the coilpack and its still there. starting to look at the ptu connections. found some good videos on youtube about testing the PTU and different components.
so after a few more checks today, -measuring continuity of the no.4 coilpack plug signal wire back to the PTU. All good -measured continuity of the same wire all the way back to the ECU. All good. -with a different combination of plugs on and off and tests i managed to check all continuity of all the plugs between the ecu, ptu and coilpack for the no.4 signal wire. all good -tested my PTU off the car. seems to be ok, when doing the resistance check across the PTU ground the the coilpack primary circuits i get infinity reading on a couple? with the manual saying readings should be "not 0 or infinity". but when i do the reverse polarity tests they seem ok. starting to run out of ideas/ things to test
well looks like i spoke too soon, after being left scratching my head wondering what it could be i put it all back together for one last crack and...... it works! Im assuming maybe one of the PTU plugs wasnt sitting right and after them many un plugging and re plugging that its sitting good now. either way i dont really care, just glad its running smooth again
