Ok as z has only 90000 km,the main worry is just the belt braking .
So whats wrong with just replacing (BELT ONLY) ?
Now remember this is just a what if.
Lets leave cost out of it for now
Id say with the nick my Z is in,just replacing only the timing belt it do 90000 km again on all old timing belt bits but just new gates blue on her ?

Because replacing the tensioner is cheap insurance.

    Ok that + a belt = around $ 480 as to full kit $950

My main concern about the timing belt isn't the belt itself but the idler pulley studs snapping. Worth the upgrade in my opinion.

    Timing Belt
    Tensioner
    Upgraded Idler Studs

Water pump no biggie if your temps are ok but good peace of mind - I run without timing covers so WP is an easy change if it craps itself.

and...water pump (essential at these K's) ........and thermostat ideally.....you can see where this is going now..........

If your idler studs and bearings are not worn - there is some merit in what your saying as cam seals can also hold out a little longer.

Saving $ VS a Disaster is a tough call in anyone's books - serviceability of parts can help you make the right choice in these cases based on condition (only you can check the parts physically - it's your call)

I personally choose paying the $ for piece of mind knowing it was done right

Better of just doing the lot, the bearings have only done 90k yes, but the greese in them is now what 25 year old?
The kit is a few hundred more, where a rebuild is a few thousand more

Full kit is $900+ these days?!? Used to be about $550. Don't bother with the gates racing belts.

I thought your Z was a 1990 model TT, call me skeptical, but the chance of your Z being a grey import from Japan & displaying the correct milage on the odometer is highly unlikely.

Think about it this way, something goes wrong in this area due to skimping out, it may cost you a motor. If you wanna save a couple hundred $ are you going to be prepared to fork out 1k for a motor?

The oil seals i am a little on the maybe side for. But if the part moves or has water running thru it. Really really consider changing it.

$1k is the cost of an UNKNOWN motor. It might be ok, or could just be a very heavy paperweight.

Yes $1k for a service kit is expensive, realistically the cost of replacing a whole engine (assume all stock) is actually closer to $5k.

No brainer really, even if you replace the engine, chances are the engine that's going in is gonna need a timing belt / 100k service anyway.

It is a 1990.Every thing is in such good order,i have owned a lot of cars and bikes in my time and id bet the 90000 km is on the money with this one.Yes I know about JDM turn backs :br:

    WHAT IF?

Read the "Simons Zed Resurrection" thread.

We replaced the idler, and the tensioner, and 1 stud snapped.

    = dead engine.

= 14 months of work and waiting and $3K+ worth of parts all gone.

    What if?

You can take your "what if" and.....

I did belt and tensioner on my last engine not knowing or even thinking about the idler studs. Trust me they can fail even if they look good. I was lucky doing low revs and the cam shafts snapped to a neutral position I would not count on that

Suck it up and don't pay the ferryman!

Some cheap arse quotes going around ??? Even from experienced Z lovers?
Piston clash will cost more than 1k - the heads alone would cost that!

then your possibly looking at pistons if at high speed when failing occurs............... I've even seen a conrod outside the block from a timing failure!

By the time you get it out and replace the 25 yr old hoses head gaskets / seals / bolts that break etc. your in so big with it in parts (2K+) that you know figure might as well do the rest of the engine ............... (add another 3K+)

...and this is all based off you doing the work yourself - (except the boring/honing/heads)

    - or you can add mechanics and your now up to 10K.....

Now you might as well build a race engine after doing this ......add another ..........7K+..............

5K-7K is a good estimate for piston clash!

So just buy the OEM kit in full..................for the cheapest price you can get.........or go the whole hog like me

Whatever you do......don't skimp out a Z engine because they are hard to service without removing, if it was an easy engine to pull - then you could take some risks

........but you bought a Z, so suck it up like a man and go without bread at the dinner table until you can pay the dosh to do it properly! :D

Okay i am still trying to see where you get $1,000 for a oem service kit ie:100k or 200k one. Yes if you buy from overseas, but it's much less for that in Australia and as several have said " What if " you scrimp a few bucks and you blow your engine for a few measly bucks and you go too the bank for a big ass loan to rebuild and they say " WHAT IF WE SO NO " . your screwed.

On the subject of timing belt kits. The one that conceptzperformance seems to have a few extra bits in it compared to the OEM one we can buy locally. Does anyone know more about this or how important the extra pieces are? It's 200k one that I'm referring to.
