Consult plug options (OBD1?)

So at the moment ive got my ecutalk display permanently plugged into the consult plug.

I am looking at purchasing a heads-up-display that also needs to plug into it.

I also have nistune but no cable so im looking at buying a consult-USB cable.

Just wondering what my options are, and what kind of plug it is im looking for.

After doing a search I found there are OBD2 plugs on newer cars, and I believe OBD1 consult which is the nissan specific plug we have (is this correct?)

So a proper cable to use with nistune is like $100.
But on ebay there is an OBD1-OBD2 adapter for like $10, and an OBD2-USB adapter for like $10 as well. Could I jsut hook both of these up and itd work?

Because thats a $20 option. Also I only plan to use Nistune once to change injector values and then get it done properly.

Thanks for any help. Bit confused here.

Also im wondering is there such thing as a double adapter for these plugs? Id like to have both the ecutalk display and the heads-up display plugged in and running permanentlky if possible. Or would I have to splice each wire and solder in a new plug to achieve this?

Bit more reading it seems there are lots of different OBD1 plugs, we need the nissan specific consult one.

Another option is this $20 plug consult-RS232 serial

Followed by a $5 serial RS232 - USB adapter i likely have at home.

I have that unit adapter and a rs232 to USB cable and conzult works fine.
Just configure the USB to use one of the available ports the Conzult can use.

Interested to know more about the heads up display.

EDIT: Assuming you want to have two things plugged in at the same time...

The problem you are going to have is that OBD I is a basic electrical standard where a device plugged into the Consult 1 port talks to the ECU by essentially putting a series of pulses on the data line. That's ok until you want to have more than one device talk to the ECU.

If that's what you want to do, then each of the devices must know to look at the line and see if it is busy before attempting to talk.

This method of avoiding contention is exactly how ethernet cables work.

Now, in OBD I, there is no concept of multiple masters (ie devices that want to talk on the line) - you have a single ECU replying to a single device.

"Hang on" I hear you say - "what about the HICAS and A/T ECU's?"

When you "talk" on the OBD port, you prefix your conversation with 3 "Hello ECU x" messages, where "x" is the ECCS, A/T ECU, HICAS ECU or A/C ECU. The ECU you want to talk to then answers all messages until you tell another ECU you want to talk to it.

This is different to OBD II where there are multiple masters, and each master can talk to any sensor. A master device just asks a sensor for data which replies with the info requested.

I believe that ECU Talk does some trickery that allows you to plug another Consult device into it by acting as proxy for the 2nd device.

The short version is that I don't think you can do it. Happy for NewKleer to prove me wrong.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks, youve both answered some of what I was wondering.

Also I just read up that the little phone line looking plug on the front of ecutalk can be plugged into laptop via USB and the unit bypassed. This cable came with the ecutalk display so my nistune worries are solved then.

    As for the heads-up display...
If I get a complicated one that shows heaps of things it needs OBD plug attachment. However you can get simple ones that only show mega basics like rpm and speed. I know theres a speed cable somewhere I was meant to splice my turbo timer to. I guess I could jsut get a simple km/hr display and splice into this cable near the ECU?

I was thinking this bad boy below. Nothing complex, just a simple digital speed readout maybe with a colourful rpm wheel :)

    or one of these:

(could someone please tell me how to replace a long link with a single word such as 'link here' that when clicked directs to the long link please? ive wondered how to for years..

Its an S-300 unit that costs around $200 and plugs into OBD plug.

Either type it like this (without the asterisk) or click the hyperlink button (green three left of the 'insert image' button)

    [*URL="http://google.com"]link[/URL]

    And it will do this:

I have one of these HUD devices for obd11 (use it on a Honda Jazz LOL) and would love to modify the connector etc to use it on my Z. Anyone know if we can use the pinouts of our Z connector to use an ODB11 connector?
