    Hey guys,
I'm just wondering what is the right price to pay for a twin turbo z? I'm currently looking at buying one for $8,500 and I think it's a real fair price for 124xxx kms for a 1990 model. My dad seems to think otherwise and it's to much because of its age. I've seen the car in person and it's great, runs great and sounds healthy. He still has all the receipts for the modifications (I only saw $10,000 in receipts)

There's probably no "right" price for a Z, it depends on condition, but $8500 is probably in the ball park for one in reasonably good condition. Don't put too much store by the mileage, especially if it's a Japanese import. Many had the clocks wound back before they were imported. Check out the cars for sale in this forum and also on Carsales.com.au
You'll then get an idea of what prices they are fetching and the condition. Try to test drive a few before deciding on one. If possible take someone who knows Z's with you. Quite likely someone on the forum who lives in your area would be willing to assist.

Yeah I understand, and that would probably be the case with the ks on the clock, not much on sale in NSW that I'd want to purchase, just patiently waiting for the right one to come along. Thanks for you advice though!

Plus 1 on Red-Z's comments, plenty of good knowledgeable members on here around Sydney, who if asked nicely would love too help out, even if you have too take the car up to a members business ( mechanic ) and get them to peruse the car for you. Dad's never really understand pricing on cars like ours, yet he would want a gazillion bucks for his 20 y/o + car given the chance.

Mate if it's a good honest car the price you're looking at isn't bad. Doing ANYTHING on a Z is very labour intensive so the cheap car that just needs a little work can very quickly become a money pit.

Re the car in question drop me a line if you want it checked out. I can do a very comprehensive test including compression, cooling system, head gasket, error codes, boost leaks and the usual for not much.

If your Dad's opinion is important. Your Dad might see the value in the Zed if it was checked out properly, so you should be grateful that someone whose business is Zeds is offering. Forget NRMA car inspection, you need a Z-expert.

I have seen a road service guy lift the bonnet on my car and scratch his puzzled head. (Mine is NoTurbo) you don't want your Dad around for that.

    Don't know anything.....

.....about the car you are looking at, but I'll bet it won't come close to the blue 1994 model Z-ster is selling on this forum.
Happy to talk to your Dad about these cars if you really want one! :D

I've checked that one out already, It's immaculate and beautiful. Only downside is I'm not sure if the turbo seals are leaking. I'm just waiting on his response to get back to me!

I've been bugging my dad to let me purchase one :(

What makes you think the turbo seal is gone...?

My dad said it might be the turbo seals, since it's high milage and the owner said that the tubros are stock and haven't been touched. I posted a post up about a week ago about it, but didn't get much replies to it. There was smoke (white) coming out when it was ilding, but i was doing some research and looking around and it might just have been some consendation. (though my dad said when he took off in it with me in the car, there was white smoke but then it disappeared)

Was it steam or smoke? Oil smoke could well be turbo seals, or it could be rings or valve stem seals. All are bad news for a potential buyer.

Is this the slicktop 2 seater in earlwood for 8.5k? If so its my best mates Z your talking about. As he has told you he is no hurry to sell it and will hold as long as he has to to get the right money for it, funnily enough this advice has come from me. I am glad he has not budged on that figure as its a great car. I hope he keeps it. If I have not put so much time and money in mine I would have swapped and taken the slicktop lol.

Because I am interested in buying it. It will be my first TT so I was unsure on the price. I had a look around at other prices and that seems to be a fair price and good price. I checked it out in person and it was really nice, it drove smoothly and it was really comfortable. You did a good job then man. I told him that I would get back to him soon when I can get the rest of the money I need because he is in no rush to sell it.

What does he think the smoke is from?

There wasn't any smoke with the slick top. The one that had smoke was another zed I was talking about that I went to look at.

  18. Whenever I buy a car, my dad usually goes on and on about redbook value, and how I need to find a car within it's dictated price. total load of bs.

The Z32 is a 20+ year old car. You will get beaters and you will get gems. To a certain extent, you get what you pay for. I bought my Z32 in May, and all the cars <$5000 here in Melbourne were nasty. Missing bits of interior, mechanical faults, exterior damage.

Having said that, I looked at one in Moe asking $8000, and it was worse than the one I saw in Narre Warren asking $3000.

The key is to know what to look for. Do your research on pricing for parts. Small things you look over can be expensive, and they don't have to be mechanical. Window and T-top molding, if damaged and needing to be replaced is difficult to find brand new, and may cost up to $400 brand new. Fabric interior damage, steering wheel repair, replacing plastics all add up if you are fussed.

I ended up paying $6999, and ended up with the best NA z32 I could find. The k's were a little higher than I wanted (220,000km) but it had been maintained properly, and I have had few issues.

Don't get hung up on kilometers. A car serviced every 5,000 kilometers sitting at 200,000 can invariably be much less problematic than a a car serviced every 15,000 kilometeres at 120,000.

Looking at Carsales, there are some nice one's in your price range. Good luck.

Thanks mate, I understand what you're saying. Because every prices varys on the car I looked at depending what's been done to it and how well it's been taken care off.

I had a smiliar issue when I brought my first NA z32, at the time I thought it was a good price for the amount of KM (128000) on it, Though it was far from perfect. It soon became a money sink. Now that I spent the money fixing her up, she runs beautiful and it's really reliable. (now has 133000)
