NA vs TT, What do I do?

Discussion in 'Non Technical' started by FatChickThriller, Sep 7, 2014.

  1. So I have had my zed now for a good 6 months, and am absolutely in love with it. I have zero intentions of changing cars from the z32. I have spent about 4 grand on it, sourcing parts, getting things fixed, and replacing the aftermarket crap the guy before me put on it, and so forth.

I am almost completely satisfied with how it is. I still need to get a new exhaust, do something with the suspension, and some other minor aesthetic problems. However, I still have the linger thought in the back of my mind whether I am doing the right thing.

TT's are cheap, very cheap in fact. They have a bit more power, and respond better to tuning.

I have not had an opportunity to drive a TT, so I guess I don't know what I am missing out on.

However, I don't know whether I should keep pumping money into something I might end up selling in 2 years to go to a TT.

A lot of the members on here have owned both NA's and TT's. So I guess the question is:

How satisfied are you with your car?
Do you really feel the difference that the TT's makes?
How do you find the reliability and maintenance costs on your car?

Both cars have their pros and their cons. But for those who know, which do you find to be the best overall?

I had an NA 2+2 (sold it to my Dad), and now have a TT 2+0.
As much as I love my TT, the NA was just so nice to drive.

The TT is stupidly fast, but I wasn't able to drive it as hard as I could with the NA, because it is very hard to push the limits in the TT.

I do think however, the set up counts for a lot, as my TT has a very heavy clutch, stiff coils, and adjustable suspension everywhere.. where as the NA had a nice easy clutch and a simple spring/shock combo, making the NA a lot nicer to just cruise in.

My dad is perfectly happy with the NA, as it is just a nice weekend cruiser, but if you're after power, TT hands down.

If you like your NA, don't try a TT :p

  4. From the people I have spoken to, a criticism of the TT is it's not so smooth acceleration. Apparently, due to the turbo charges kicking in, though there isn't noticeable turbo lag, the power comes on quite strong on the upper band. Any comments regarding this?

My NA is silky smooth, smoother than any other car I have driven. The power is strong, but it's consistent through the power band. I makes cornering lovely and cruising great. Sure, I don't win drag races, but that's not all that important.

    its like sex.......

one is sex by your self... :W: ....
and the other is with the partner of your most erotic dreams...:D

both ways get you off but in all reality we all know which is the real deal

at the moment your driving a NA......
which us TT guys know stands for Not Applicable, much like a hand job you DIY, it really doesn't count

  6. That's a great analogy! I might just buy a TT because of it.

My TT is very smooth, I think if you stay with stock turbos (T22 based) or a T25 based turbo you won't find that they 'kick in' its just a slightly steeper curve.

Also, if your car is nearly perfect doing a TT conversion is quite possible, cost varies depending on what set-up you want but its probably not that much more expensive than fixing all those electrical and mechanical problems again. If your engine has good compression it should handle 10psi without too much stress, I'm running 10psi through a standard NA engine at the moment but its not as healthy as I had thought and has some blow-by issues and lifters aren't too happy. Its survived two days at wakefield though, waiting for summer to come and really test how stable it is.

Standard TT's are very smooth in their power delivery, compared to your NA there shouldn't be any difference other than it will accelerate FAR QUICKER...

Modified TT's usually have larger turbos, these take a bit longer to 'spool up' but develop much more boost at a higher RPM range, so yes they don't generally deliver a smooth power delivery in comparision to a std TT's....

Having said that, it again would come down to the type of modifications that have been done to the TT ZX, a mildly modified ZX would be just as smooth as an unmodified ZX, on the other hand a highly modded ZX will have a very distinct power band and on and off the power would see a very sharp change in power delivery.

    horses for courses.....
I like the high speed I can get from my modded TT ZX
I also like driving the stock TT my missus owns....
    &
I have been known to cruise around in my sons NA from time to time...

but when it comes down to it.....
the sex is ALL about the purple beastie lurking in the shed

    Ive had both...

Had an NA 2 seater for 10 years. Now have a 2+2 TT. The TT is a different beast to the NA. Smooth effortless power without question. Whereas I felt I always had to really push the NA. Having driven and owned a TT, I couldnt go back to NA only. But I would gladly have an NA in my garage next to my TT. They are a great cruise car, and although less power, I still love them. To this day, I still regret selling my NA. I should have kept it along side my TT.

If I had an NA again, the only performance mods I would do would be a pod filter intake and a nice exhaust. I would spend more money on suspension and brake upgrades so you could drive with spirit on a nice twisty road with confidence.

NA accelerates like the wifes ex 2003 accord euro or present 2013 mazda 6. Dont think it will keep up with my diesel cx5 up to 60kph though That said it handles much better and is much more fun to drive.

TT starts out like a NA but then the turbos kick in and it takes OFF. It does not handle like the rx8 and does not have the torque like the v8 soarer but it is a fantastic car to drive. A bit more complex than a NA to maintain though.

Of all my cars I think the tt z32 has been the most fun to drive.

I had more fun in the NA convertible though

Nothing wrong with the NA but it does not give that turbo kick

Hmmm, not much help I suppose

Hi I have both NA and tt, most of my money is in the NA 2 seater auto slick top, I'm keeping that original, and a 2 seater targa top auto tt everyday drive.
They are nice to drive, but not as nice as my first z that was a 2 seater targa top tt man, it is up to you, but I would keep the NA original and in two yeas get a nice tt and build it up and sell the NA in 10 or 20 years. :)

    Thanks

  14. Hey Gimpie,
That's what I was kinda thinking. My NA is in great condition besides the amount of k's, and being a '95 it's one of the last ones to be brought into Australia.

I really, REALLY want a yellow zed, it was what I was originally going to buy, but the only one I found was in absolute terrible condition. Maybe I'll save up and buy a yellow TT when I get the chance, or import one.

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

Go drive a TT, then report back.

Finding another "look" you're into is a good way to make the switch. That's part of how I justified getting rid of my NA for a TT. Keep an eye out for a nice boosted yellow car.

i actually expected to see someone here saying buy an n/a and do a rear mount turbo and e85 install. or somethign along those lines.

    Dont do that.

Buy a TT , the best you can afford and put away a steady stream of money for maintenance

Easier to buy a TT from the get go, but make sure its had the major service done, or be prepared to have it done right away.

    Obviously.......

.....you need to go for a ride in a good TT, not a clapped out unit. :br:

"TT's are cheap, very cheap in fact." - That's very true, the more clapped out they are, the cheaper they are. :(

"How satisfied are you with your car?" - Extremely! :D

"Do you really feel the difference that the TT's makes?" - Yes! :D

"How do you find the reliability and maintenance costs on your car?" - Excellent! Have not had ANY issues with this vehicle since the day I bought it, however the initial purchase price was above 'the others' for sale at the time. :D

Having had a N.A. 2.0 seater auto, which also was a pleasure to drive in the city & on the highway & the current T.T. 2.0 seater manual at the same time, for an everyday driven vehicle that spends its time in city traffic, the N.A. would be my preferred choice.

The T.T. has more power & better handling than an N.A. & would be my preferred choice if you can only have one. :zlove:

Save your money for a good T.T. & don't invest any further in the N.A. you can always transfer any "good bits" you have bought to a T.T.

I have a v8 soarer with a fair few mods and I'd never compare its torque to a turbo 6. A TT zed or TT soarer wins as far as torque goes hands down.
