    Hey guys, purchased my '92 300ZX 2+0 N/A a few weeks back.

Before I purchased it the guy mentioned it has difficulty starting. Cool I thought, can't be too bad!

And I was right, it's not too bad, but I need to stomp the gas when I turn it over for it to start, not every time, but majority.

Any idea what could be causing this? I get a feeling that it's the starter motor, but I have no idea why the accelerator stomping works?

The other thing is the interior is a little bit, eh. Was looking at some leather/vinyl kits on ebay, anyone have experience with these? I saw a few old threads mentioning them but all the image links are dead!

I'll throw some pictures up when I get home if you'd all like, great to know there's a large community here!

    how hard are you stomping?

the Z usually does a good job of priming the fuel system with the pump. just make sure that stops making its noise and then usually it should start with a slight touch of the ignition.

if you are stomping hard, maybe you are shaking the car a bit and this is also shaking the starter motor.

I'm not sure how the starter motor is connected electronically, maybe you could check the connector and spray some contact cleaner on it. you might have a dodgy connection there?

I'm not an expert on the subject, but maybe you might want to replace the fuel filter as well? clutching at straws there though...

Thanks a heap for that link, looks like I've found my next money sink!

I'm definitely thinking electrical, might get in there this weekend and have a poke around, she runs a bit rough so I might just take her down to Adelaide Z cars and get them to look it over whilst I get a service :D

Have to stomp pretty hard, although sometimes if it's a cold start she turns over just fine, no issues! Very confusing aha.

I'll get it checked out when it goes in for a service. Time will tell, thanks for the response

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
Holding the throttle wide open to start it is usually a sign the engine is flooding on startup.

If GB is right about flooding, the plenum will need to come off. This will be a prime time to do under plenum cooling line deletes.

    second this.

what you are doing when you are stomping the accelerator pedal is oppening the throttle butterfly, which might mean its getting stuck. Also a good way to check if its flooding is to check the spark plugs to see if its covered in fuel or the colour of it.

What exactly is happening here? You said you think it's the starter motor. Does the engine not turn over when you try start it, or it turns over but won't start.

As said, putting your foot to the floor while cranking in a fuel injected motor turns off the injectors to help start an engine that had flooded.

Can you give us a better description of what happens when the car won't start?

    Hey, plenty of responses!
So essentially when I attempt to start it up it will just not turn over, sometimes you can hear a click, I'm assuming that's the solenoid? If I stomp it and turn it'll start, sometimes not quite, it'll make the engine bay give an awful high pitch sound.

I'll try and record it for you when I get home, my description is not really going to help too much

Before getting to carried away with having major problems pull off one by one and check / clean all the connectors you can find under the bonnet. You may find some need replacement which most can be sourced by posting what you need in the Wanted section.
    Injector x 6
    Coil Packs x 6
    C.A.S x 1
    P.T.U x 2
Idle control at rear of motor x 2
Idle Position Sensor x 2 ( also make sure you are set at 4.6 volts , check tech section on how to do.
Air flow sensor x 1 under nose centre piece in front of radiator.
And any others you find. Especially check the fuel injector and coil ones as well as p.t.u . As these ones being corroded or loose can cause some weird symptoms. A lot of times it's a silly small thing.
    Cheers
    Dave
