Which oil filter tree?

    Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find a 'shorter' oil filter tree to allow greater clearance for a modified sump. I know there is a short NA filter tree but I don't know if this is only US, or was also on JDM/Aus spec zeds. I would really appreciate if a few people with NA's could have a look and post up what type they have with model details.

ie 1989 JDM NA version 3 (see below).

    Version 1: 91 JDM TT

    Version 2: unknown NA

Version 3 (on the left): US NA
Version 4 (on the right): US TT

    Thanks

I recently put a tree from a JDM NA into my TT and I'm pretty sure the height remained the same, presumably to clear the steering rack etc. I expect you would have some serious fitment problems with the US version.
You might be able fit a side exit filter relo' plate in there, not sure though. http://www.mscn.com.au/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=351 for reference, expect running the lines to be painful.

Yep, the height of version 1 & version 2 above appears to be very similar.

If you change out the center adapter in the block (Unscrews). You can go straight into the block with the oil filter. I would double check for your application. But AFAIK the thread into the block is M18x1.5 and the thread to the oil filter is 3/4"x16. This is what is on the VG30DE(T). I am going to run this with a sandwich adapter to an oil cooler on my NA.

    Regards

Assuming a filter / relocator will bolt up there and seal, there's not enough clearance to the rod for the wastegate actuator :(

I can see what people are referring to now with the clearances to the steering column. The US versions essentially come straight down, whereas the JDM/AUS version come down at an angle rearwords.

So I'm thinking the short one I'm after is going to be US only.
(and clearance won't be an issue as I won't be running a filter on it, so it won't extend low enough to have any clearance issues with the steering).

Looks like I better post up on the US forums.

Be careful when buying an NA filter tree that it is actually from an NA. My NA has a filter tree more like the that on the TT but it is cast without the extension, galleries and porting for the oil cooler. More like a 4WD. As in the unknown NA above.

    Regards.

I'll be running the cooler inline with the filter rather than a bypass like stock. So don't need the porting for the oil cooler.

Another alternative would be to run an Oil Filter "Re-locator" straight into the block and mount the filter elsewhere???

You're not reading my posts drifter lol. There is not enough clearance to the wastegate actuator rod. And yes I plan to mount the filter elsewhere regardless.

Sorry can't be bothered. Not feeling too well. :D:D:D

Also when mounting your lines and cooler etc. I have been told to make sure you keep them below the oil filter port to prevent damage from air pocketing on startup when cold.

    Regards

PS. The other thing I was thinking is you may be able to get a "re-locator" straight onto the block with the actuator removed. I'm not sure 'cause all my stuff is NA. Otherwise you may be able to block off and port the oil cooler/filter from elsewhere on the block/pump???

But I reckon if you can fit a tree, you can fit a re-locator. Just you would probably need an M18x1.5 to 3/4"x16 adapter. And remove half the engine to get to it.

    Regards.
