Just picked up a manual gearbox today. Can someone confirm that the blue stuff is transmission oil/fluid? I didn't know it was blue?? Also it seem to be leaking out the end where the shaft comes out.......is this a problem?

Sounds like it is/was running redline lightweight shockproof -blue oil.

Re leaking might be an idea to change the output shaft seal just to be sure.

Redline Lightweight Shockproof, or more commonly referred to as 'smurf's blood', is blue :)

If there is no shaft in the end yes it will leak out.

Yeah oil will leak out the bum with no shaft in it, all sorts of ways to stop it, a dummy shaft (assuming seal is OK), plastic bag and heaps of tape etc.

Would be tempting to replace seals while box is out.

This is Emiles old GB, if I know him well enough it's probably been changed as he's had it apart and looked at by a professional if I remember correctly.

    Definitely smurfs blood :D

Of course the gearbox should have been drained before removal, so really shouldn't be leaking out unless it's stood up on an angle.

Who does that? just pull it out and throw your clothes away because they're covered in transmission oil. Unless you have a trans-lift which makes it ridiculously easy to pull without spilling

That strange Black Thing surrounding the Output Shaft spline IS AN OIL SEAL, Marcus My Love!!!
It will NOT function "as intended" without an Output Shaft Yoke/Tailshaft installed in position.

How the heck did you end up with my old Gearbox?

And yes I had the Redline Shockproof Lightweight stuff in it. If memory serves, it went in around Jan/Feb 2012.

And as Lloyd said, the seal does it's job to keep the oil in, once a Driveshaft is inserted, otherwise, any Gearbox will leak out the back if tilted towards the back.

    Cheers,
    Emile

Hey Emile, good to hear from you mate. Yes it's funny how gearboxes go around . I'm hoping this one will be a bit quieter than my current one that whines away all the time. Now I just have to work out how to swap them over .

Hahaha yea! If it makes you feel better, I never had a whining issue with that Gearbox. Shifting was normal, occasional small difficulty going into 4th (I'm talking like maybe 1 out of every 20+ shifts into 4th, and who knows, could have been a bad clutch engagement on my part), but that's fairly common I hear. It was given the once-over by a Gearbox Mechanic and I was told it was in good condition, there was only one small bearing (forgot the name) that needed replacing and we did that.

They're fairly straight forward to swap mate. The hilarious thing is, I owned that car for 5 years. I've owned the Z34 for under 2, and I've dropped my Gearbox in the 370 waaay more times then I touched the Box in the Z32 heh. Also, interestingly enough, the exact same procedure and layouts from Z32 to Z34. On a hoist, for a straight Gearbox swap, I'm down to about 2.5 hours haha.

Hope she serves you well. :D

    Cheers,
    Emile

Awwe shucks. I thought this whole time no one noticed. I still lurk around from time to time. And if it makes you feel better, I didn't really 'migrate' to the ZClub forum. Probably still more active on here than over there.

Actually I'm currently Zed-less... driving around in a '05 Honda Jazz right now.

    Cheers,

Sounds like it's in pretty good nic then. 2.5 hours ... wow that impressive. I don't have a hoist so will have to get the car up on some stands. What's up with the Z34 at the moment?

Took me about a full day without a hoist. :(

Z34 is at the smash repairers. Some clown didn't see my indicator on a round-about... was pretty much just cosmetic damage though. Swung by the place today and the rear quarter was already fixed. Just waiting on finding a replacement door instead of re-skinning existing one.

If it takes you a full day then it's going to take me two.....hmmmm maybe I'll take it to a workshop.

Ouch.....bet you weren't happy when you saw that on the side. At least it wasn't major and it'll be back to perfect when fixed.
