    Hi guys,
Went to get a spare set of keys cut the other day and had some issues trying to get it to work. After going back twice to the locksmith managed to get the key working in the ignition but not in the door.

Was wondering if its necessary that I buy a blank fairlady specific key like this
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-Nissan-300zx-Blank-Key-Fairlady-Z-VG30DETT-Z32-/120577218870

or if you guys have had no issues with a generic key?

In the manual in my car it says there should be a key code on my key, but well.. there isn't one and it also says the original key should have come with a metal tag with the key code on which.. I also don't have.

Have also read that it should be on a white sticker in my glove box on the american 300zx forum, but when I looked its I have a white sticker with my tyre pressures (all that time I spent looking for it on my door jams..) and on this forum that its on the ignition barrel but also nada.

I do have a j-spec zed so not sure if that makes a difference.

Was just curious if you guys know if there's a way I can get a key code? I read you can get it from your VIN number if you go to the manufacturer.
Anyway all of this is not really necessary since I have a spare key which works in the ignition now but I figured I could ask to satisfy my curiosity ;P

Sounds like you have an amature cutting your keys.

Your original key is worn, and so is the barrel, probably more so than the driver door.

You need to find a sweet spot, chances are if you cut a new one to thecode it still would hhave trouble working in aall locks.

If you code cut a key IT WILL WORK. look on th ignition barrel or the drivers door barrel for the number.

    Adz_79 I do it in a Zed

A good locksmith can look at the key and work out the code. My 2 Zeds had fresh keys cut from codes that the locksmith worked out by just looking at my old key.

Very true. The guy that cut mine looked at the key and knew the code number. Bizzare..........

hmm thanks guys, couldn't find my key code anywhere on the car, but sounds like I just need to go to someone else next time to get my keys cut.

I pulled the lock off the hatch (easiest one to remove) and took it to the locksmith.
He was able to guess the code from checking out the lock.
He cut a key from the code he worked out and it worked and on the doors.

    Scarey

I had no issues with a key cut

My authentic Zed Key was looking a little worse for wear, I just had it cut at a proper locksmith (not one in a shopping center) It cost me $11 to get a generic Nissan Key and getting it cut,
The locksmith said that the authentic Zed Keys are Incredibly hard to cut as the machines and tools they use to cut them have issue griping the key.
So yea.. advice would to be find a good independent locksmith.
    Good Luck! :)
