so I'm currently in the process of putting a new head gasket on my z31, and the manual says to torque to 22 nmt then 43 then back off till loose, then up to 23 nmt then 47 for final torque settings, i work in the performance industry and i have never seen setting that low in my life, most Nissan engines i have worked on have been over the 70 nmt .

My manager even said that the settings are way to low, and hes been in the performance industry since the early 80s, maybe im just being stubborn but i need some advice regardless

Just had a look in a Z31 1986 300ZX FSM 47 ft-lbs is the final tightening tension of 5 stages (there is a angle spec also).

There is a tightening order for the 13 head bolts per side, maybe the large number of fasteners has something to do with the low torque setting.

Pretty detailed Z31 rebuild page: http://www.redz31.net/pages/headwork.html
