This is the inside of the crank sprocket! Fair to say its had its time! I was loosening the exhaust sprocket bolts and the trout wye from that moved the timing belt. I thought "that's odd", did it again and saw the crank sprocket move with out the crank moving

So some of you may remember my HB came off and smack out a gouge in my crank. I had done a dodgy fix with JB weld but quickly saw today it had already failed. So I've called an on site welder to weld up that damaged area with the TIG.... Not a cheap job :(

So I can't wait to get everything back together because the way that sprocket was would mean the timing has always been slightly out.

WOW. That is nasty. Timing was out by 1/2 a tooth.
She should run well when you get it back together.

Make sure they don't use too much heat when welding as they WILL warp the crank!

Replace the front crank seal after its welded. Better still remove it and drain the sump before he starts so it doesn't melt onto the crank.

The JB weld idea wasnt on my list of suggestions....... :p

Ok so the job was done earlier in the arvo and I'm reasonably happy. It needs some "fine tuning" so that the key will fit in but I haven't got my hands on new keys until tomorrow. I just hope it will last many years until I pull the motor for a rebuild. If it happens to fail in the meantime I will have to do an engine pull and replace.

Apart from people making sure their crank bolt is tighten up to spec, I'd also suggest people check the condition of there crank sprocket! After today's findings It explains a few little issues I've never been able to sort. When the timing belt was replace about 100k km's ago before I bought the car, I noticed it oh said the timing belt. Nothing else was replaced. The idler bearing felt worn, there was what appeared to be rubber deposits built up in spots. Apart from that, the seals hadn't been leaking but where fairly brittle apon removal.

But very lucky to have done this now as I'm not sure how much longer that crank sprocket would of held!

So in addition to the above. Here is a pick of the woodruff key that was somewhat "holding" the crank sprocket in place! Look how it's staggered!
