Spoke to an old forum member (THZX) at our monthly NDSOC meeting tonight, and he told me a horrific story that he is currently going through. Cut a long story short, he got pulled over by a policeman for apparently having too low a Zed. Even after explaining the Zed was stock height, they still pinged him. Two weeks later he gets a letter from the EPA stating that his car has to go in for testing. His car failed the test because he has aftermarket, larger, non stock turbos on his car. Apparently the EPA are now testing for this (or have been testing, I dont know) and are trained in what is OEM and what is not. He is now not allowed to drive the car. He now has to pay more thousands to get more tests done and try and get some sort of ADR approval for the after market turbos, with no guarantee that this will work. Or pay thousands, and replace the turbos with stock units. As discussed at the meeting tonight, many of the GTR boys have now had the same problem and apparently Victoria is the most "policed" state in this regard. Anyone here from the other states have any similar issues or know anyone who has?
When I was pulled over some years ago in my slicktop by Traffic officers they checked the injectors and turbos. While I was at the Queensland Department of Transport getting a FMIC defect waved, I was queried again about them, and was told that I required a mod plate if either Injectors or turbos had been changed.
This stuff is already well known, aftermarket turbos/injectors/ecu's are not legal unless emissions tested and engineered.
i know a few skylines that have been done for highmount turbo setups and even one that had a lowmount GT3071R.
A lot of the issues are that he only has a generic tune from Bob. If it had been done properly with a nistune. It likely would have passed.
I have heard the government is thinking of adopting the british yearly MOT inspections for cars older than five years..
Well... it really puts me off upgrading the turbo's now. If they can ping you for non-oem turbos, then thats one hell of a hassle in a Z32 considering that we cant just simply swap them out...
Wonder if anyone has a list of things that police can defect you for, then hold proof that there isn't anything wrong with the car (I.e Tape measure in the boot to show that the car is more than 100mm above the ground, tyre tread measure etc etc) Other things like a Decibel tester for an exhaust might be hard to get a hold of, gotta love Victoria eh?
Can anyone explain how they know that there aftermarket turbos? its not like we can open the bonnet and go oh look that's not standard..
Unfortuantly its up to there discression.. Once THEIR measuring standards have "proven" you to be below standard well theres not much you can do about it..
Guys, if you need to pass emmisions test get your car tuned to biofuel drive down for your test and foot to the floor. Will pass all day. Just getting the fuels a bitch, there's 2 places I know in NSW.
Bio fuel? You mean E85? Theres hundreds of places in NSW that sell it, hell there are 3 near my house.
EPA test.. They send you to an official EPA testing centre, where the staff are apparantly trained into what to look for in certain cars (ie, jap cars, hoon cars etc etc)... Car goes up on the hoist, and they can spot everything. In regards to Tony (THZX) they also failed him on his catalytic converters. But thats not such a big deal to getting failed for not having oem turbos.
