NA Air Compressor Replacement - Places In Melb?

My NA aircon has never worked in the two years that I have owned the car. The belt has never been on the air compressor. Melbourne has been hit with a hot spell of weather and I would love to get the aircon going again.

An old source (Brytech) informed me that the aircon compressor was seized (by spinning the pulley and telling me) and I got no idea how long it has been sitting without a belt. I guess the air compressor would most likely need replacing with the whole system needing a re-gas. A few aircon shops I have been to have refused to work on my Z32 due to the limited space which isn't helpful at all! I'd try replacing the compressor myself but I know the refrigerant can be dangerous for an amateur. I could try putting on a belt, but my guess is my car will just die when I hit the AC button.

My question is does anyone know an aircon shop or mechanic who will work on the Z32 air compressors (replacement, re-servicing etc.)

I am also guessing that the refrigerant that came in our cars 20+ years ago is different to the ones on the market today. Does any further mods need to be made to the aircon system to handle the different refrigerant (if required)?

    Any information would be appreciated.

Thought you were buying a stock air filter box and air con compressor from KR?

Just post in the Wanted section for a compressor then change it yourself. The gass is not dangerous so whoever told you that is full of shit. Then take it to a aircon place and get it regased. They will just put a modern gas in as a replacement (no big deal). Thats taking that Bryan told you the truth?

    Some info...

I had the aircon system overhauled and regassed in my old NA by Dontex Automotive in Vermont South. They did a great job, trouble shooted the entire system. Depending on whats wrong, it can be costly. A new compressor is not cheap, so if you can find a 2nd hand one that is in good nic, that will be much cheaper.

Also, they will have to change the receiver / dryer, along with checking for any leaks, when regassing the system. This can be pricey, mainly due to labour. But at the end of the day, if you want the aircon fixed, you have to pay to get it fixed. And Joe wont turn you away because the "engine bay is too cramped". He's been working on Z32's for nearly 20 years.

I always find its easier to have a spare a/c with you when you go. That way you have a second option.

If the car still has the old r12 aircon gas in the system, it would require draining first. From here most places will replace the fittings, receiver/dryer and seals to run the new R134a gas which is much better for the environment.

Most places will put a UV dye in the system with the gas to ensure that any future leaks will be visible by using a uv light.

Melbourne weather has been particularly hot lately, it was something like 30 degrees at 12am last night. Crazy weather.

I've always been taught that to help the system in times of low use (in winter), its a good idea to turn the a/c on a few times during the year. This will ensure the seals will stay lubricated and won't dry up over time.

Looks like I will be making a trip to Dontex Automotive. My injectors were serviced there so I am not hesitant towards taking my Z32 in for an aircon service!

Thanks again guys for your input. Be good to get some cold air again.
